Perhaps the best thing about suggestions by candidates like Bernie Sanders and Liz Warren to a welfare model closer to those seen in Europe is that there are years of evidence about what that could mean for Americans. Despite the candidates' cherry-picking of old and debunked data, there is a lot of evidence in Europe that legislating wealth equality will, in fact, have the opposite effect. My friend Chris Edwards of the Cato Institute writes about a new study by Pirmin Fessler and Martin Schurz that suggests welfare programs are making wealth inequality worse, not better. Fessler and … [Read more...]
Can You Have an Affordable, Warm, Gun-Friendly Retirement?
Some retirees want it all, and by that, I mean a state with warm weather, firearms freedom, and low costs. Catey Hill, an editor at MarketWatch, was asked for just that by a retiree living in California. She responded with some ideas for locations offering just that. She wrote (abridged): You’re not alone in wanting to flee California in retirement — and for you, the costs make it hard to live anywhere in California on your Social Security checks alone. Though you’ll be hard-pressed to find a state with weather as good as it is in many parts of the Golden State. That said, I’ve found some … [Read more...]
Survive and Thrive November: Our Cabin on Kodiak, Alaska
Dear Survivor, I’ve been working with Dr. Lee for 16-years. He was only 53 when he became a client. Even back then he was the millionaire next door. But for about two weeks of every month, he doesn’t have any neighbors. That is unless you happen to have a cabin on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Even then you probably won’t see each other. Overlooking the water, his cabin is a fly cast away from world-class King Salmon fishing. He loves to fish. He also loves to share his knowledge and to keep learning. Before he retired he would sharpen his professional axe teaching university students … [Read more...]
President Trump Will Not Bow Down to Progressive Witch-Hunt
Fifty years ago today, after being elected in a close race the year before, President Nixon faced the same disbelief and smugness by the same deep state and the media who today still can’t believe Trump won. You remember the utter shock when Donald Trump won. The disbelief was incredible. And three years later, that same media and deep state just won’t let it go. You might think this impeachment mess mirrors Nixon’s. It does not, and I don’t believe it ever will, because, unlike Nixon, Trump will never quit. But getting back to 50-years ago today when Nixon was in the first year of … [Read more...]
Training Military Dogs
They say each military dog saves the lives of 150 to 200 service members. Here, thanks to National Geographic’s Brian Clark Howard, you get an inside look into the rigors of war-dog training. It’s pretty powerful stuff. … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life Under Democrats Would be Tragic
If you think the Dems are only after billionaires (and I know you don’t) then think again. Here you get a look at how they’d treat an estate worth $3.5 million, which will cast a huge net capturing savers like you. Anna Sulkin writes at WealthManagement.com: Rep. Jimmy Gomez (D-Calif.)recently introduced legislation, For the 99.8% Act (the Act), aimed at lowering the estate tax exemption amount and increasing the tax rate for some of the wealthiest Americans. The Act is identical to the legislation introduced by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) earlier this year. Under the Act, estates would … [Read more...]
New Update! Ken Fisher Won’t Take No for an Answer
“We ended ours a long time ago. It was a disaster from day 1,” a reader wrote to me recently. Then there’s this: “The hard-selling was relentless, even infuriating, prospective customers said,” explains Janet Lorin at Bloomberg. “Marketers called homes, spammed work email and impersonated friends, colleagues, and government officials.” The Bloomberg article continues: “CALLS REPEAT EVERY DAY. I SUBMIT A COMPLAINT EVERY DAY. NO CORRECTIVE ACTION TAKEN. WHAT CAN I DO???????????????????,” a resident from Waterford, Pennsylvania, wrote in a July 2016 email. Would-be clients were … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy: Out of Gas in Newport (Report Issued)
You may recall that Newport, RI had a natural gas disaster earlier this year leaving 7,455 customers without gas (read: no heat) on the coldest day of winter. Turns out it was another manmade disaster. Yesterday, the Rhode Island Division of Public Utilities and Carriers (DPUC) released its report and here are the reasons: First, demand for natural gas was in excess of contractual limits by the Algonquin interstate pipeline driven by sudden low temps. I would think this one could have been avoided. It gets cold, real cold in Rhode Island during the winter. There will be an increase … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: California Dreamin’ then Disaster Strikes!
Reader Inbox You can’t make this stuff up. As one client emails: E.J., I feel blessed by PG&E. They threatened to turn off power again early this morning and at this writing (1:35 PM) it is still on. The Saturday night to Monday afternoon outage wasn't exactly fun. I lost everything in my refrigerator and freezer and couldn't cook anything. I'm in a condo, so no generator is allowed. My son's community in Maine looks more inviting by the day. And another: E.J., Hope you are well. Read the "Your Survival Guy" article about the sorry state of the sorry state of California -- … [Read more...]
Anti-Gun Politicians Target Small Gun Shops With New Tactic
There's a new tactic being used by anti-gun politicians that takes direct aim at small gun shops by imposing heavy taxes on new gun purchases. These new taxes are being levied at the city level, and that leaves small shops with a terrible choice, pack up and move out of town, or close up shop. Zusha Elinson reports in The Wall Street Journal: Tacoma, Wash., could soon become one of a handful of U.S. cities to levy high taxes on gun sales, opening a new front in the battle over how much power local governments have to regulate firearms. Washington and 44 other states ban cities and towns … [Read more...]
