There hasn't been a political pundit able to pierce through the haze in Washington D.C. quite as well as Tucker Carlson in a long time. After you finish reading this post I wrote in December, check out what I wrote about Tucker's thoughts on America's real goal, maximum happiness. This Christmas when your family is gathered together in conversation, will you stick your neck out yet again in defense of President Trump? The answer might be worth pondering for a moment. Because with Trump, there are only two camps: love him/hate him. The love him camp may not like what he tweets, but they … [Read more...]

My Concerns as Money Piles Up at Vanguard
Last week Vanguard founder Jack Bogle spoke out about the dangers of index funds, something he helped pioneer. Take a look back at this piece I posted on October 12, 2017 for more depth on the issue. Let the good times roll? Great lyrics from the Cars but it’s a song I can’t get out of my head thinking about the money piling up by the truckload at Vanguard’s back door. We’re talking nearly $300 billion in the first nine months of this year alone. All of that money unloaded and stacked up with the rest of the $4.7 trillion at the firm. That’s a lot of confidence in one company. And maybe … [Read more...]
A Survival Guy Stocking Suffer
Merry pre-Christmas from Your Survival Guy, bringing you holiday cheer and good tidings. How, you may ask? Well, imagine you accidentally drive off a bridge and are trapped in your car. Not necessarily the way you want to get the day started. You may find yourself in need of cutting away your seatbelt and shattering your window as water seeps through the floorboards. Worry not. This little tool called the Resqme, will aid in your peaceful egress and makes for a great stocking stuffer and for an even better story. … [Read more...]
Is There Anything Better than This at Christmas?
As Christmas approaches is there anything better than an ice-cold oyster and a sip of Prosecco? For me, it’s the combo that reminds me of Summer while Newport is frozen. It’s the counterbalance that makes it fun and it’s the Prosecco that keeps more money in my pocket for compounding. Understanding both concepts, counterbalance and compounding, are key for us all as I explain here: Yesterday’s trashing in the stock market offers us a chance to review the arithmetic of losses and the value in a counterbalanced strategy. Technology shares as represented by the Nasdaq composite index lost … [Read more...]
Bad Guys and Their Guns
Restrictive gun laws don’t keep guns out of the hands of bad guys. They’ll get their guns on the black market, or simply make them as you’ll see below. J.D. Tuccille details the efforts of various criminals, rebels, insurgents, and enthusiasts to produce their own firearms. He writes: The types of weapons people produce for their own use range widely in sophistication: "from crude, improvised single-shot guns to semi-professionally manufactured copies of conventional firearms." The trend is toward more advanced weapons—including mortars, recoilless weapons, and grenade launchers—to satisfy … [Read more...]
Vanguard GNMA Up, Nasdaq Drops 3.8%
Yesterday’s trashing in the stock market offers us a chance to review the arithmetic of losses and the value in a counterbalanced strategy. Technology shares as represented by the Nasdaq composite index lost 3.8% on the day. Let’s say, for example you began the day with $10,000 in Nasdaq. By late afternoon, when the market closed, it was worth $9,620 or down 3.8%. You now need (not a good word in investing) a gain of 4% to get back to even. Now, imagine a string of ten days like yesterday, or a 38% decline. A 61% gain is needed just to get back to even, or where you began with … [Read more...]
Brazilians Excited to Get Their Gun Rights Back
Brazil is very near to becoming something of a gun rights unicorn, that's a country in which citizens have had their rights harshly restricted, but then they have taken them back. With the election of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazilians are optimistic that they'll be allowed, once again, greater freedom to protect themselves on streets that have become some of the most violent in the world. Despite strict gun control, Brazil's murder rate is six times higher than that of the United States. Cartels have been battling each other on the streets, endangering disarmed innocents caught in the middle of … [Read more...]
Vanguard Founder Jack Bogle Sounds the Alarm on Index Funds
You pay attention when the founder of the Vanguard Group, Jack Bogle speaks. As the father of the index fund it would be hard not to include Mr. Bogle’s bust on the Mount Rushmore of financial legends. Therefore, when Bogle speaks, I listen. As do thousands of his groupies known as "Bogleheads." “There no longer can be any doubt that the creation of the first index mutual fund was the most successful innovation—especially for investors—in modern financial history,” writes Bogle here, “The question we need to ask ourselves now is: What happens if it becomes too successful for its own … [Read more...]
Congratulations to Boston Bruins Legend Rick Middleton #16
Last night was a special night at TD Garden Boston, as former Boston Bruin Rick “Nifty” Middleton had his number 16 raised to the rafters, only the 11th in the history of the franchise. I remember going to the old Boston Garden in the 80s with my dad. The first time walking up the concourse and then into the Garden is a memory I’ll never forget. It was just one of those moments you remember as a kid, and how incredible it was to be in the building. Even when we were seated in the nose bleed seats high up in the rafters you felt like you were part of the game. Middleton was simply … [Read more...]
