I've discussed making use of your local water resources for survival before here on Richardcyoung.com, and there are a number of water focused pieces of gear in the Richardcyoung.com "Navy SEAL Survival Kit." Now take a look as Mike Jones, writing for LoadoutRoom.com, details methods for purifying water that he learned as a military survival instructor. Pre-filtering you water: This is important, if your water is full of particulate matter and other disgusting crap you might want to consider doing a pre filter. I typically do this by putting a shirt over the mouth of my canteen and pouring … [Read more...]
Has North Korea Put an EMP Weapon in Orbit?
In a somewhat terrifying interview with Newsmax Now host John Bachman, former CIA director James Woolsey raises the prospect that North Korea has put an EMP weapon in orbit, or could do so. Woolsey says America must be in a position to shoot down a satellite. Watch the interview here. The threat of an EMP attack is serious. Such an attack on the United States could be devastating, as found by the Congressional commission set up to examine such an event. A burst with enough power from a high enough altitude could have effects on almost the entire contiguous 48 states, not to mention Canada … [Read more...]
The Truth Behind the S&P 500: Part VI
I have grave concerns with the S&P 500 (See parts one, two, three, four and five of my series dedicated to those concerns). You can see in my chart below the index would need to fall by 38% based on yesterday’s closing value to trade at a normalized valuation. Doing as well as the S&P 500, or the market, is a double-edged sword. Receiving market performance guarantees you’ll never beat it. Believe me you’ll want to beat it when it crashes, because the grief from losses far outweighs the jubilation from gains. … [Read more...]
Do You Know NFL Hitman James Harrison?
When the Pittsburgh Steelers cut NFL linebacker James Harrison mid-season, the New England Patriots signed him faster than you can shout “blitz!” Prior to the season Men’s Journal spent a few days in Scottsdale, AZ while Mr. Harrison recovered from surgery. As the NFL’s most heavily fined player in a single season, he’s the type of player you hate to play against, but love to have on your team. After reading the article, I appreciate even more why Pittsburgh fans were so upset to see this God fearing, gun loving player go. As Your Survival Guy, I had to laugh out loud reading how he … [Read more...]
Is America Losing the Air-to-Air Missile Race?
Russian and Chinese weapon systems have made leaps and bounds in the last decade, in some cases, even popping up overnight. One area in particular that’s causing concern is the countries’ air-to-air missile capabilities, where the U.S. Air Force (USAF) is seemingly dragging its feet. Recent reports surfaced suggesting that the Chinese have a new very-long-range air-to-air missile (VLRAAM), one that could hit U.S. Aircraft at twice the range of today’s missiles, before they could even shoot back. The missile has a speed of Mach-6 (Hypersonic) which is twice as fast as the U.S.’s newest … [Read more...]
Which State Won America’s 2017 Migration Games?
Each year Americans from all parts of the country make the decision to leave their home states looking for greener pastures in others. The destinations aren't always the same, but one thing is constant, when opportunity arises, Americans move to meet it. The Tax Foundation points out that states are competing with each other for citizens, and that one way they do that is by attempting to offer the best tax rates possible. Vermont led the nation in terms of inbound migration as a percent of total moves in 2017. Using migration data collected by United Van Lines, Margan Scarboro … [Read more...]
Edwards: States Should Handle Their Own Infrastructure
According to my friend Chris Edwards at the Cato Institute, 98% of American streets and highways are owned by states and local municipalities. Plans for rebuilding America's infrastructure from the federal level seem misguided when faced with that fact. How on earth can it be more efficient to use an increased federal gasoline tax to rebuild infrastructure owned by local governments? The short answer is, it can't be. Here, Chris explains some more about why any plan that raises the federal gas tax isn't a great idea: Revenues from the 18.4 cent-per-gallon federal gas tax go into the Highway … [Read more...]
Will NFL Playoff Weekend be Another Dud?
I was talking to a client yesterday who is a lifetime NFL season ticket holder. He told me he’s not even excited about the playoffs, and hasn’t been watching much football this season. He said he’s fed up with the lack of respect for the national anthem. Yes, this is anecdotal evidence but it matches the decline in viewership. Take a look at these stats reported Jimmy Traina at Sports Illustrated: Despite being big games, the NFL had a terrible weekend when it came to ratings. Numbers have been down all season, and the wild-card games were no exception. Even the Panthers vs. Falcons game, … [Read more...]
How Will Americans Pay Tax on Their Crypto-Currencies?
As I explain in my four part series on bitcoin (read parts one, two, three, and four), I'm a skeptic of crypto-currency trading and I don't own any crypto-currencies. I believe, much like Warren Buffett told CNBC on Wednesday, that the crypto-craze won't end well. The IRS has given some guidance on how to account for sales of crypto-currencies, but keeping track of all sales may be hard. Brian Fung explains in The Washington Post: The most recent IRS guidance on the matter is from 2014, when it said taxpayers should treat their virtual currency like property. Under that rule, taxpayers … [Read more...]
