The Real Tax-Cut “Mafia Thugs”
Who will foot the tax bill in high tax states if the successful decide to pick-up and leave? With all the hand wringing by blue state politicians about this tax cut triggering "an economic civil war" or comparing Republicans to "mafia thugs" maybe they should consider creating more ways to keep successful Americans living there. The WSJ has more here: You can figure out who most needs reform by the decibels of protest. Amid other apocalyptic warnings, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo last weekend declared that the GOP bill’s limit on the state-and-local tax deduction will trigger "an economic … [Read more...]
Tax Bill Big Changes to 529 Plan
One item, in particular, that I like with the pending tax reform is how the 529 plan will be treated. It expands the use to elementary and secondary schools at a max of $10,000 per beneficiary per year for qualifying expenses. This from the NYT: Buried in Section 1202 of the tax bill are a number of proposals to consolidate and simplify various tax breaks for education savings. Part of the section in effect would neuter something called a Coverdell account, which families have used for years to save for both private school and college. But then comes the big change: Elementary and high … [Read more...]
The Navy SEALs’ Favorite Gun
I own two Sig Sauer P226s and have trained for days at the Sig Sauer Academy to gain proficiency. I recommend you get your guns and your training in 2018 whether it’s with a P226 or another make or model, or brand for that matter. I’ve always believed the best handgun to be the one you own and the one you’ve trained with. More on the Sig 226: The P226 in SEAL service became known as the Mk. 25. The handgun was a derivative of the original Sig P10, a highly successful handgun in its own right, but updated with modern features. Like the 210, the 226 used the Petter-Browning locking system, which … [Read more...]

There's nothing better than seeing the wonder in children's eyes as they unwrap a present, but there's another gift you can give your children or grandchildren that will be just as powerful. Ready for Winter? Not Until You’ve Read This
In the North, with winter comes bitter cold. Weather extremes, be it heat, cold, moisture or anything else, call for extra levels of preparedness. When driving you should take special care to prepare yourself and your vehicle for cold weather. A great place to start building your plan for winter weather survival is with the guidelines of the National Weather Service. The NWS recommends travelers fill up their tanks often, that way if they get stuck, they can keep the car running, and the heat on. Also, don't be afraid to adjust your schedule. No commitment to punctuality is worth driving … [Read more...]
Despite its High Taxes, Connecticut Can’t Pay its Bills
Despite some of America's highest taxes, and despite being America's wealthiest state, Connecticut can't seem to pay its bills without breaking into its rainy day fund. Such raids on state savings are rare, and usually happen in states reliant on commodity royalties for revenue. When commodity prices tank, those states have a hard time making up the difference. Connecticut is a well rounded economy, with a heavy dose of the finance business located in its South Western corner, and the insurance capital of America, Hartford, dead center. The state isn't suffering from a wild swing in a … [Read more...]
Can Better Homes Be Built in Fire Prone Areas?
Watching the devastation of the California wildfires, and the havoc they have brought to so many families is heart breaking. With firefighters having only limited success in battling the blazes, they seem at times to be an unstoppable force. But there are things people can do to better prepare for wildfires. CBS News reports: While humans can't really control as much as we'd like to believe when it comes to disasters, we do have the ability to control where and how we build. For decades, most wildfire education and enforcement campaigns have focused on creating so-called defensible … [Read more...]
