In rural Georgia, school administrators are encouraging teachers and other school employees to arm themselves. With schools spread far and wide in the sparsely populated county of Laurens, it could take a long time for police to engage an intruder at the schools. Those minutes could equate to many lives. School personnel are being asked to be the first responders to any threat. Arlinda Smith Broady writes for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: Laurens is a rural county with a population of less than 50,000, with about 25 percent of those under 18. The spread of the county — its 807 square … [Read more...]
Yes, that is Real Socialism in Venezuela
Coffee has been grown in Venezuela since the late 1800s, but today a minimum-wage employee in Venezuela can afford only 5 cups of coffee a month on their wages, with nothing left over. The trouble with Venezuelan socialism, just like all attempts at socialism, is that it misallocates resources. Now, after years of a fictional economy, reality is hitting Venezuela hard. The government is attempting to literally paper over the problem by inflating the currency, and as always that is making things worse. Terrible reports are coming out of Venezuela. Parents are giving away their children, … [Read more...]
It’s Simple: Retirees Go Where They are Treated Best
For years retirees have flocked to Florida for its warm weather, and more importantly to many, its low taxation. But with the flood of people have come high home prices and subsequently, high property taxes. Now, many retirees are looking deeper into the American South for low cost places to live. A group of them, known as "halfbacks," are putting down stakes in Appalachia, where land and property taxes are cheap, and they can be surrounded by the beauty of the mountains. Cameron McWhirter explains this accelerating phenomenon in The Wall Street Journal, writing: The halfback phenomenon—so … [Read more...]
Are Unions Bankrupting the States?
According to the National Right to Work Committee, unions' ability to elect their own bosses leaves states open to political capture. Union bosses amass huge campaign warchests which they use to fund sympathetic candidates. In fact, "in the nearly two dozen states where government-sector forced union dues and fees are still authorized and promoted, union chiefs funnel a large portion of the conscripted money they collect from civil servants into efforts to influence the outcomes of state and local elections." Strong Right to Work laws protect workers from being forced to unionize, and also … [Read more...]
Trump Makes It Simple: Make America Great Again
President Trump, at a recent rally in Montana, was on his “A” game. At one point, he referred to the phrase “thousand points of light” wondering out loud what the heck that meant. And then he said: “Make America Great Again”. People know what that means. It’s simple. Because deep down in their gut Americans know that our greatness has been wasted on foreign endeavors by the former and current elites of the old GOP. As Pat Buchanan points out in The American Conservative: With never-Trump conservatives bailing on the GOP and crying out for the Party of Pelosi to save us, some painful truths … [Read more...]
Tolkien: A Look Back at a Master
I've written to you before about my family's enjoyment of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Undoubtedly Tolkien is one of the best known authors of all time, but what is less known is Tolkien's use of visual arts as an aid and accompaniment for his written works. Now, at the Bodleian Libraries’ Weston Library of Oxford University, fans of Tolkien can see an exhibition of his works. Michael FitzGerald writes of the exhibition in The Wall Street Journal: Under the guidance of his mother, who came from a family of engravers, Tolkien began drawing and painting as a child. By the time he entered … [Read more...]
Trump Bump: GDP Could Hit 4%
I've always liked Larry Kudlow, both during his time on CNBC, and now as Trump’s top economic adviser. His enthusiasm is contagious. I like his optimism for the economy here. Renae Reints reports on the interview for Fortune: In an interview with CNBC Wednesday, Kudlow seemed optimistic for the U.S. economy despite the current trade war. “We are getting 3 [percent] and it may be 4 for a quarter or two,” Kudlow told CNBC. “That’s all for the good. Literally millions more people are working.” GDP growth for the first quarter of 2018 was 2%. The White House has aimed to boost the economy … [Read more...]
Heat Waves and Hacking the Grid
When it’s hot outside and you can cut the air with a knife, you appreciate every second you have in air conditioning. But there's no air conditioning without electricity, or much of anything else for that matter. I’ve been writing for years about the vulnerability and sensitivity of our power grid. Here's a sample of what I've been trying to get Americans focused on: U.S. Power Grid More Vulnerable Than Ukraine's? What Happens if Hackers Take Down the Grid? America’s Grid is Vulnerable: Here’s How to Improve It Don’t Get Caught in the Dark: America’s Electric Grid is … [Read more...]
LaPierre: “They Care About Control”
In a strong defense of the Second Amendment, NRA Executive Vice President, Wayne LaPierre, told an audience in February that “They care more about control, and more of it. Their goal is to eliminate the second amendment and our firearms freedoms so they can eradicate all individual freedoms... They hate the NRA, they hate the second amendment, they hate individual freedom.” WATCH: NRA's Wayne LaPierre speaks at CPAC … [Read more...]
Trump Threatens the Cold War Bureaucracy with Irrelevance
An entire foreign policy bureaucracy has grown up around the old battle lines of the Cold War. President Trump's attempts to befriend Russia threaten the jobs and purpose of that entire bureaucracy, and they are fighting back. Linda Muller, working for Pat Buchanan at Buchanan.org, asks readers to share Pat's latest column discussing Trump's strategy. She writes in an email to subscribers: Dear Brigade, "Trump is headed for the most brutal battle of his presidency.... By cheering Brexit, dissing the EU, suggesting NATO is obsolete, departing Syria, trying to get on with Putin, Trump is … [Read more...]
