If you're trying to buy a home in Texas, you can blame California’s politics for driving home prices to unaffordable levels. Adolfo Flores reports in The Wall Street Journal, writing: Texas has long had a reputation as an affordable place to live, in large part because homeownership stayed within reach for the middle class. Now the state is being walloped by the same forces that have made homes a lot less affordable in many cities previously known for reasonable prices: pandemic-era migration from California and other more expensive areas. California to Texas was the most popular … [Read more...]
Looking for a Better America
After decades of urbanization, Americans are rebelling against the “bigger is better” mentality of city-living. Seeking a smaller, more affordable, sustainable, and secure lifestyle, some are venturing out from the mega-cities in search of a different life.
A number of techniques have become popular in an effort to save, especially scaling down the size of one’s home. Living small and saving big is even better when it’s coupled with living in a state that treats you more like a human than an ATM it can withdraw money from.
Look for a better America today. Start by reading what I have written to help you below:
BACKYARD TINY HOME: A New Must-Have for Homeowners
Your Survival Guy has been talking about the benefits of living small and saving big for years. Now, the "tiny home" has caught on as an accessory. It's no surprise when so many young people are still living with their parents, and so many adults are taking in their elderly parents to care for them. Having a second mini-home on the property gives everyone the privacy they want with a bill they can afford. The Wall Street Journal's Nicole Friedman reports: The latest amenity for homeowners is another, smaller home. These add-ons are known as accessory dwelling units. They can be … [Read more...]
The Flight from Downtown
A mix of crime, high costs, and poorly run governments have ignited a flight from downtowns in America, and one of the worst-hit cities is Chicago. Commercial real estate is facing a crisis downtown as office vacancy rates hit an all-time high of 23.7% over the last three months. Danny Ecker reports in Crain's Chicago Business: The office vacancy rate in the heart of the city during the past three months rose to an all-time high of 23.7% from 22.6% midway through the year, according to data from brokerage CBRE. The share of available space is up from 21.3% a year ago and 13.8% when the public … [Read more...]
Sheriff Stands Up for the Constitution Against NM Governor
You read yesterday about New Mexico's radical anti-gun governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, and her ban on concealed carry and open carry of firearms in the Albuquerque area, even for those with permits. Thankfully, the Bernalillo County Sheriff, John Allen, who has jurisdiction over the area has said he will not enforce Grisham's unconstitutional order. Fox News's Timothy H.J. Nerozzi reports: Democratic New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham is facing widespread pushback from state law enforcement officials following her attempt to ban concealed and open carry permits. Bernalillo County … [Read more...]
Where Can You Get Richer, Faster in America?
With inflation soaring, Americans are looking to increase their wages to keep up and, if possible, get ahead. You can put yourself in an advantageous position regarding those goals if you live in certain states in America where personal incomes are growing the fastest. No surprise, many of Your Survival Guy's 2023 Super States are experiencing the fastest-growing wages. The Wall Street Journal's editorial board reports: President Biden will never admit it, but he has Republican-led states to thank for the resilient U.S. economy and labor market. Witness how an earnings surge in … [Read more...]
“What in the Hell Has Happened to This Country?”
Originally posted March 23, 2022. This week a Quinnipiac University survey asked Americans “What would you do if you were in the same position as Ukrainians are now, stay and fight or leave the country?” While 68% of Republicans said they would stay and fight, and 57% of Independents said the same, only 40% of Democrats said they would fight for their country. In response, Matthew Hennessey asks in The Wall Street Journal “What in the hell has happened to this country?” He continues: One can hardly imagine Americans of yesteryear exhibiting such high levels of yellow-bellyism. Where … [Read more...]
California Is Driving These Wealthy Businesses Out of the State
In America, if a business can't make money, it has no obligation to offer its service, at least for now. In California, after years of wildfires wiping out their assets, insurers aren't allowed to raise premiums to account for the risk. According to The Wall Street Journal, "state Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara won’t let insurers raise premiums to account for increasing wildfire risks. California is the only state that requires insurers to set premiums based on historical experience." The Journal continues: That means insurers must base rates on prior decades when wildfires were less … [Read more...]
Nebraska Becomes America’s 27th Permitless Carry State
Nebraska's Governor Jim Pillen has signed into law the state's first permitless carry bill, making the Cornhusker State America's 27th with a law protecting gun owners' rights to carry without a permit. Gov. Pillen's signing follows closely on the heels of Gov. Ron DeSantis's similar move in Florida. Fox News' Emma Colton reports: Nebraska became the 27th state in the nation to enshrine in law the right of its residents to carry concealed firearms without a permit. "Signing this bill upholds the promise I made to voters to protect our constitutional rights and promote commonsense, … [Read more...]
Walmart Evacuates as Portland Spirals Out of Control
In the summer of 2020, Portland, like many cities, saw a spike in crime that hasn't abated. Your Survival Guy has been watching the poor business owners of Portland plead for help as the city sinks under a crime wave. Murders have soared as the city has defunded its police force. Many small business owners have fled the city, and they aren't alone. Big businesses have also been pulling their stores from Portland. Walmart has now announced it will close its last two stores in the city after constant thefts made it impossible to do business there. Alex Hammer reports for The Daily … [Read more...]
Blue States Alarmed by Fleeing Residents
COVID-19 and the riots of the summer of 2020 were eye-opening experiences for many Americans living in blue states. When they realized their politicians were willing to hurt their children and businesses with preposterous lockdowns, and to look the other way when mobs of rioters and looters terrorized the cities, residents looking for peaceful lives began to flee in droves. Now states like Massachusetts, which has watched over 100,000 people leave since the beginning of COVID-19 are sounding the alarm. Janelle Nanos reports for the Boston Globe: Sometimes, Amanda Hitchins looks out her … [Read more...]
