Fighter jets can only carry a limited amount of firepower into battle. In an article published by Defense Systems, Kris Osborne explains that the Air Force envisions drones as essential weapon mules. These mules will work side by side with the F-35 and F-22, and allow the fighters more flexibility and effectiveness by enabling the jets to conduct a mission with more weapons, sensors, targeting technology, and cargo. F-35s, F-22s and other fighter jets will soon use improved artificial intelligence to control nearby drone wingmen that will be able to carry weapons, test enemy air defenses or … [Read more...]
US Military Could Soon Fire 155 MM Electromagnetic Pulse Rounds
A new report from SBIR on Munition-Delivered Non-Kinetic Effects explains that the Department of Defense wants to “develop and demonstrate an innovative, cost-effective, munitions-based electronics systems that can deliver non-destructive, non-kinetic RF effects against a wide range of electronics, critical infrastructure, and computer-based systems”. The initial design will fit in a 155mm projectile which means it could one day be fired from the stealthy DDG 1000 Zumwalt destroyer. Extensive use of wireless RF networking for critical infrastructure and communications systems provides an … [Read more...]
