“My Effin’ Life,” by Geddy Lee of the Band Rush
Your Survival Guy’s been reading “My Effin’ Life,” by Geddy Lee of the band Rush. To understand Lee, one needs to know where he came from: the suburbs of Toronto, Canada, a child of holocaust surviving parents. His father died when Lee was only 12, and as such, Lee knew about loss at a young age. His mother, grief-stricken, made it hard for Lee to realize his own pain from the loss of his dad. When Lee looks back, writing “My Effin’ Life” at age 69, he realizes he, too, was a survivor and not just a quiet kid. He was determined. He had calloused fingers from playing, he was hardened … [Read more...]

“It’s My Job” Key West’s Farewell to Jimmy Buffett
Your Survival Guy and Gal were in Key West last weekend to confirm for New England that the sun still exists. It does. But as you snowbirds know, Florida hasn't exactly felt like Margaritaville. Which brings us to Sunday night, where we were able to find two seats for Mac McAnally's fourth and final sold-out show at the Key West Theater. Mac, as many of you Parrotheads know, was Jimmy Buffett's right-hand man on stage as a member of his Coral Reefer Band. Mac's two-man shows, with fellow Reefer and percussionist Eric Darken, have been a healing tour mixing in plenty of Buffett songs, with … [Read more...]

A Jimmy Buffett Christmas: “Wonderful Christmastime”
Your Survival Guy and Gal were recently in Key West for Thanksgiving. On our morning walks we passed Jimmy Buffet’s recording studio. Outside the door, fans had left flowers and notes along with popped tops, blown-out flip-flops, and lost shakers of salt. Born on Christmas Day, Buffett was a jolly ‘ole soul. Here’s to Jimmy. Merry Christmas, JB. … [Read more...]

Remembering Jimmy Buffett: The Oldest Surfer on the Beach
I was driving past First Beach in Newport, RI, this past weekend, watching the waves from Hurricane Lee forming an offshore break from a northerly wind. It was peaceful. And it reminded me of the song “Oldest Surfer on the Beach” by Jimmy Buffett. Appearing on the 2013 album Songs from St. Somewhere, it was written for JB by the great Mark Knopfler. You can’t help but recognize the guitar work by the Sultan of Swing. As the song fades away, it’s as if an empty board drifts away without the oldest surfer on the beach. Surf on Jimmy. … [Read more...]
Jimmy Buffett’s: A Pirate Looks at 40
In remembrance of Jimmy Buffett, who passed away on September 1, I think you'll like the following piece I posted in April of 2019 on Jimmy and his friend Jerry Jeff Walker and the Key West "Pirate," Phil Clark. Make sure you have a chance to appreciate where you’re going and where you’ve been. Jimmy Buffett put on a pop-up show Monday in Austin, TX in preparation for his summer tour “I Don’t Know”. A client of mine is driving up to Nashville, TN for tonight’s sold-out show at the Ascend Amphitheatre. Here’s a great video of Buffett and Jerry Jeff Walker. Walker (Mr. Bojangles) was the … [Read more...]
Jimmy Buffett’s Formula for Your Success Is This
When Jimmy Buffett gave the commencement speech to graduates at the University of Miami, he explained his formula for success: Talent is 10%, luck is 20%, work is 30%, and passion is 40%. Hearing that about work and passion, Your Survival Guy exclaimed to himself: "So you're saying there's a chance! If I can control 70% of my destiny, there's no reason why I can't make it work. Life is what you make it." Thank you, Jimmy. … [Read more...]
