Anti – submarine warfare is about to get a little more-high tech. Satellite based laser surveillance systems could soon help track and kill stealth submarines submerged as deep as five hundred meters. China is one country researching such systems, along with other groundbreaking tech, says Sebastian Roblin of The National Interest. According to some evaluations, today’s cutting-edge submarines like the Virginia- and Sea Wolf-class attack submarines have been evaluated to run only five decibels louder than average oceanic background noises. Even less-expensive Swedish air independent … [Read more...]
The Army Will Field a Heavier Rifle, But is Still Buying Thousands of M4s
The Army is working very hard to field its new 6.8mm rifle, but until its development is complete and production can ramp up, the military is still buying hundreds of thousands of M4 carbines. Like any change in an organization as large as the U.S. Army, it won't come overnight. The 6.8 millimeter is the future, but 5.56mm rifles like the M4 and the SAW remain the present. Todd South of the Army Times reports on the effort to introduce the more lethal 6.8 millimeter rifle. He writes: All of this building and sales to outfit the force comes at the same time the Army is pouring untold resources … [Read more...]
The U.S. Doesn’t Have a Defense Against Hypersonic Weapons
The U.S. currently has no direct defense against hypersonic weapons and would need to rely on deterrence against any hypersonic threats. Russia and China are currently racing to develop such hypersonic weapons. At CNBC, Amanda Macias discusses how America’s current missile defense systems are built for ballistic missiles, and how the U.S. will need new systems if it wants to detect and defeat hypersonic threats. She writes: America's top nuclear commander described a grim scenario for U.S. forces facing off against a new breed of high-speed weapons that Russia and China are developing. "We … [Read more...]

Sig Sauer M17 and M18
“The M17 and M18 pistols are manufactured by Sig Sauer, who earned the $580 million contract to produce the weapons in January of this year,” writes Kris Osborn at the National Interest. “The new pistol is built with a more ergonomic configuration to better accommodate the widest possible range of hand grip techniques for soldiers and enable rapid hand switching as needed in combat.” Read more here. Brazilians Excited to Get Their Gun Rights Back
Brazil is very near to becoming something of a gun rights unicorn, that's a country in which citizens have had their rights harshly restricted, but then they have taken them back. With the election of Jair Bolsonaro, Brazilians are optimistic that they'll be allowed, once again, greater freedom to protect themselves on streets that have become some of the most violent in the world. Despite strict gun control, Brazil's murder rate is six times higher than that of the United States. Cartels have been battling each other on the streets, endangering disarmed innocents caught in the middle of … [Read more...]
Hurricane Michael Damages F-22s
You can’t make this up. As Hurricane Michael ripped through the Florida panhandle, home to Tyndall Air Force Base, an unspecified number of F-22s were damaged because they lack the parts to be operational and were stuck in hangars to take a beating, reports the WSJ: Part of the F-22 problem is upkeep on a coating that helps the planes evade radar. Another issue is the supply chain for parts now that the U.S. no longer produces the airplane, and “some original manufacturers no longer make the parts or are completely out of business,” GAO notes. Air Force officials told GAO that a simple wiring … [Read more...]
F-35 Fleet Grounded after Crash
It was a mistake cancelling the twin engine F-22 program. The funds had been sunk so to speak. And then it was cancelled in the ninth inning. Talk to any pilot and he’ll tell you two engines are better than one. Now, the inferior single-engine F-35 is grounded because of another problem with its balky engine. Not good if you have only one of them. The F-35 program has never really gotten off the ground. It’s been pushed. It’s been forced. Here’s a thought. If Jeff Bezos has figured out a way to sell rockets to the Air Force, let’s open the F-35 engine to real market competition. It would … [Read more...]
My Favorite Guns
My favorite guns are the ones you own. But for me, when it comes to handguns, I favor Sig Sauer simply because of my training at Sig Sauer Academy. (read more about my trips to Sig Sauer Academy here, here, and here). When I talk to my friends who own Glocks, they tell me how much they love them. I’m in the process of purchasing the Glock 19x—the model put forward in the U.S. Army handgun selection contest, because I figure if my friends love Glocks, and Glock submitted it for the competition, then it’s probably more than OK for me. At the end of the day, there’s never a bad time to get … [Read more...]
