You can’t go wrong with Kermit Lynch. I like this 1990 blast from him on serving Turkeys. He wrote: Throughout eighteen years of business I have withstood the temptation to tell you what to serve with turkey. To demonstrate that middle age has not fixed my brain in concrete, that I am still full of fire and rebellion, I’m going to shatter tradition and tell you what to drink with the traditional Thanksgiving feast: California Chardonnay. Oops, no, just kidding. Let us look at the problem more closely. You are sitting around the bird with your uncle who annually proclaims, “I’m … [Read more...]

Your Retirement Life: The New Mustang Arrives
Your Survival Guy loves the fact that the new Ford Mustang is a loud, sock it to ‘em V8 engine. Let it rip! At Car and Driver, Eric Stafford writes of the new Mustang: The Dark Horse is an entirely new breed of Mustang, one that shares no bloodlines with historic models. While it's based on the new seventh-generation V-8–powered Ford Mustang GT, the Dark Horse is more badass out of the box, and it's bred for racing, with numerous standard performance features and exclusive track-focused options. Think of the 2024 Ford Mustang Dark Horse as the love child of the outgoing Mach 1 and … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Make a Plan to Be There
Happy September 1st from Your Survival Guy. It’s been quite a summer and it’s not over just yet, but it sure is starting to feel like it. Because the more serious season of fall with kids back in school and vacationers back to work is on the doorstep. In my conversation with you, you’re telling me about your epic summer trips, like golfing at Whistling Straits in Kohler, WI (yes, that Kohler), your time with the grandkids, swimming, gardening, and more. But you’re also telling me about your health and how you and your spouse are tackling an unwelcome development that is never what one … [Read more...]
THE MIAMI MODEL: An Alternative to the Blue City Blues
The stories out of big blue blob cities like San Francisco, LA, Chicago, and New York are getting worse. Is there an end in sight? It's hard to say, but what those cities have in common is leadership with a radical progressive philosophy, treating criminals like victims, and producers like piggy banks. No wonder Americans are fleeing them for Your Survival Guy's Super States. One Super State city that has become a Mecca for those leaving the carnage of Democrat-run cities is Miami. In The Wall Street Journal, Miami's Mayor Francis X. Saurez explains the success of Miami, writing: On one … [Read more...]
Here’s Another Reason to Visit Your Survival Guy in Newport
By American standards, Newport is an old town. Since it was incorporated as a town in 1639, and later as a city in 1784, a lot has happened here. There's a range of impressive history, including the historic mansions built by America's titans of business, the Kennedy wedding, but also some intriguing history from the Revolutionary War and the post-war era that followed. Newport celebrates its history with a number of events each year, and one of those events that appeals to people interested in America's founding era is the annual reading of a letter from George Washington to the … [Read more...]

YOUR RETIREMENT LIFE: Investing in the 70s, a Remembrance
Did you invest in stocks in the 70s? Do you remember the 70s? Like they say about Woodstock, if you do, “you weren’t there, man!” Look at my chart below to see why it was so forgettable. Imagine retiring in the late 60s and spending your retirement years investing in stocks. Not much fun. But, if you went into retirement with a plan, there’s a good chance you could weather the storm by owning a mix of diversified assets. When I say plan, I mean preparing before retirement with answers to questions like: How much can I “afford” to spend? What kind of yield can I get on blue-chip … [Read more...]
Here’s Where Americans Want to Move
Americans are looking for cities with a low cost of living, and strong economies. The Wall Street Journal has run the numbers and found the top 10 cities in what it calls The WSJ/Realtor.com Emerging Housing Markets Index Summer 2022. The cities on the WSJ's list are nearly all in red states, most of them are in my Super States, and the one standout, the Visalia-Porterville area in California, is in what is essentially a red island in the state's sea of blue. The WSJ's Nicole Friedman reports: Low-cost cities with strong economies fared well in the second quarter as high prices and rising … [Read more...]
