The annual U-Haul Growth Index report has been released, and each year, it paints a picture of where Americans are moving based on rentals and drop-offs for U-Haul vehicles. This year's big winner was Texas—again. Sara Chernikoff reports for USA Today: For the third consecutive year, Texas had the largest number of people moving to the state, according to U-Haul's Growth Index report. Each year, the moving equipment rental company tracks the net gain of one-way U-Haul trucks arriving in a state or city compared with the net gain of trucks leaving that same state or city. Texas tops 2023's … [Read more...]

Are Your Taxes Changing Next Year?
Thirty-four states are implementing major changes to their tax code next year. Is your state one of them? The Tax Foundation's Manish Bhatt and Benjamin Jaros explain: Thirty-four states will ring in the new year with notable tax changes, including 15 states cutting individual or corporate income taxes (and some cutting both). Generally, state tax changes take effect either at the start of the calendar year (January 1) or the fiscal year (July 1 for most states), with rate changes for major taxes typically implemented effective January 1—either prospectively, as in these cases, or … [Read more...]
Corruption in America’s Blue Blob Cities
You have read here about America's Big Blue Blob cities, where politicians put their own interests ahead of those of residents. But politicians in those cities aren't just spending taxpayer dollars poorly on their own agendas. They're also corrupt, and demand bribes for their own personal gain. At the Cato Institute, Chris Edwards lists just a few examples of America's big blue blob city corruption, writing: In Chicago, dozens of aldermen have been found guilty of corruption over the decades. One study found that the crimes typically involved “schemes to extract bribes from builders, … [Read more...]
Cato’s Freedom in the 50 States: New Hampshire
In the Cato Institute's ranking of "Freedom in the 50 States," New Hampshire has—for the twelfth year in a row—been ranked first. Cato's analysis of New Hampshire reads: In the fifth edition of the index, Florida had overtaken New Hampshire as the freest state. New Hampshire regained the crown as the freest state in the country in the sixth edition. The Granite State has maintained its number-one ranking in this edition and even improved absolutely. In the more distant past, New Hampshire had a huge lead over the rest of the country on fiscal policy, a lead that partly dissipated between 2000 … [Read more...]
Is Sanity Returning to America’s Cities?
"Is sanity finally returning to America’s blue cities?" That's the question asked by Joel Kotkin in City Journal as he analyzes the recent rejection of progressivism in some cities as a trend. He writes: Is sanity finally returning to America’s blue cities? The places that incubated inept policies such as “defund the police” and “sanctuary cities”, but welcomed open-air drug use, are beginning to have second thoughts. In Seattle, Portland and San Francisco (which featured in a recent UnHerd special), lawmakers are looking at ways to curb public drug use — a move that has been symptomatic of a … [Read more...]

According to new data published by the office of the Idaho Secretary of State, a vast majority of the state's new arrivals are registering to vote as Republican. Emma Colton reports at Fox News: Thousands of conservative-leaning Washington residents fled the deep blue state for neigboring Idaho, voter data published by the Gem State shows. Data published by the Idaho Secretary of … [Read more...]
Georgia Accelerates Implementation of Its Flat Tax Plan
Georgia's government has accelerated the implementation of the state's flat tax plan after big budget surpluses increased the plan's viability. The Wall Street Journal's editorial board explains: State governments aren’t known to run ahead of schedule, but Georgia lawmakers plan to deliver early on a promised tax cut. The acceleration is made possible by another state budget surplus. As Gov. Brian Kemp put it, “this is what happens when you budget conservatively.” The Governor announced the updated tax cuts Monday to set the agenda for the coming legislative session. The new proposal would … [Read more...]
