What happens when a state’s government performs so badly its people pack up and leave? That’s what’s happening to blue states like California, Illinois, and New York, where many of the best and brightest are taking their hard-earned money and finding greener pastures in free states like Texas and Florida.
Last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released its revised job data for the period from January 2024 to January 2025. California jobs numbers grew by 22,500, fueled mostly by government employee growth. In Texas, 187,700 jobs were created, with positive gains in many categories.
People are following the jobs. Citizens moving for jobs ramped up during COVID-19, and the recipients were red states with booming economies. The impact this movement will have on politics is only now beginning to come into perspective. According to the American Redistricting Project, red states like Texas and Florida could gain as many as four seats in Congress (and their equivalent four Electoral College votes). Other projected gainers are Idaho, Utah, and Arizona.
The biggest losers will be California (-3), New York (-2), with other blue states losing single seats. Those include Oregon, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island.
Eleven Electoral College votes moving to red states is like Democrats losing the entire state of Massachusetts in the next presidential election. The impact could be monumental.
But blue state governors have only themselves to blame. Policies that put political agendas ahead of constituents for decades have driven voters to look for alternatives. Now Democrats are reaping what they’ve sown.
