Where to Live in Retirement? I Got You Covered Baby!

May 15, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XLVII You worry about where you live in retirement. I get it. You hate the idea of leaving your kids behind. I’m here to tell you: Don’t despair, they’ll visit! But if social distancing is your concern, consider snowy Maine or New Hampshire in January. You might see a bear or two, but they’ll be back asleep before you know it. You’re going to love your new-found freedom. Thumbing through my 2020 copy of the Traveler’s Guide to the Firearm Laws of the Fifty States, Maine stands up strong. Want to drive a gun to your home? Fine. Just be sure to leave … [Read more...]

You Owe it to Yourself to Continue Doing What You’re Good At

May 14, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XLVI Clients of mine on the West Coast, we’ll call them Rock and Tess, sold their business a number of years ago. They were in their early 50s. Rock could care less about money. Tess handles that. Rock fixes things. Rock can fix just about anything mechanical. Rock is still working. He doesn’t need to. But Rock loves his work. He continues to do what he loves to do. In speaking with Tess this week, I remind her that a j-o-b is one of the most valuable assets in the world today. If “retirement” can wait, why not let it? I tell her … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s Home (and Money) Protection Plan

May 13, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XLV Your Survival Guy was recently asked how I would protect my family if a gang showed up at my door (answer below), which leads me to wonder: Where you live may never be more important. Elon Musk has had it with California. Put me in jail, he says, but don’t think I’m letting my business die without a fight. How hard would it be for you to move to a Red state? I’m not saying you do it now, but in prep for the next unforeseen event you might want to think about it. Would being in a Red state improve your situation? We might find out, as guys … [Read more...]

“Good Golly Miss Molly!” You Own a Bank?

May 12, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XLIV When you visit me in Newport, R.I. you’ll need your GPS. Our office is at 98 William Street, but you’ll never find a number on our building. We like it that way. The privacy. The building? It’s beautiful. It’s brick with ivy climbing up the side, manicured trees in front, protected by a black wrought iron fence. Welcoming? Perhaps, that is, if you can get beyond the startling “No Parking” sign. Once inside the gates, you’ll see a solid wood door protecting the foyer, with an American flag, and a security phone setting the tone. Once you dial-in, … [Read more...]

You Can Kiss Summer Goodbye in Newport, R.I.

May 11, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XLIII You can kiss this summer goodbye. This weekend Newport opened for business, but it’s hardly open. There were cars driving along Thames Street, but hardly the traffic you see on a typical Mother’s Day. Most of the cars were just driving with no intent on stopping. The two restaurants I saw open had maybe four customers combined. Hotels are already thinking about next summer—if they survive. Governor Raimondo still has a 14-day quarantine requirement for out-of-state guests. Hotels can’t take reservations until they know when the quarantine will … [Read more...]

On Saturday, You Can Buy a Gun in Massachusetts Again

May 8, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: XLII Massachusetts gun stores will be allowed to open this weekend thanks to U.S. Judge Douglas P. Woodlock issuing a preliminary injunction to prevent the state from enforcing the unlawful order from Gov. Charlie Baker. "We don't surrender our constitutional rights. These plaintiffs have constitutional rights that deserve respect and vindication, and it becomes necessary for a court to do that rather than the executive when the executive declines," said Judge Woodlock. Gov. Charlie Baker's emergency order shuttered FFLs statewide, eliminating "all … [Read more...]

Do Governors Have the Right to Make and Enforce Laws?

May 7, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: XLI You might want to take a few minutes to contemplate your rights. How can governors go wild without checks and balances? There’s a reason states are governed by three branches, not one governor wielding a big stick. Has there ever been a more important time to consider the balance of power in your state? Andrew Napolitano writes: The current interferences with the exercise of rights protected by the Bill of Rights devolve around travel, assembly, interstate commercial activities and the exercise of religious beliefs. These infringements have all come … [Read more...]

Your Survival Guy’s Tip of the Day: Sell Until You’re Comfortable

May 6, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XL Just when you thought you might get your life back blue state governors continue to go wild. Yesterday, Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo said she will sign an executive order taking effect Friday, directing anyone in an indoor or outdoor “public place” to wear a cloth face covering. This includes walking your dog, by example, on public roads. Hmmmm. How will this be enforced? Will mask wearing do-gooders shame me for being unmasked? Live and let live. There are risks in life the minute you get out of bed. When businesses finally … [Read more...]

Governors Gone Wild Protect the Rich

May 4, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XXXIX You’re seeing up close how blue state governors love states’ rights only when they’re in charge and what a mess it creates when different rules apply across state lines. Take a look at Rhode Island and Massachusetts, for example. Rhode Island has shelter in place until next Monday, May 9, while in Massachusetts the end date is May 18. Yet, Rhode Island is more strict, prohibiting groups larger than five while Massachusetts allows ten. My parents and my sister’s family live in Massachusetts. When we gather, we make a group of ten. That’s … [Read more...]

You can Bank on This: There Will be Problems

May 1, 2020 By E.J. Smith - Your Survival Guy

Coronavirus Infects Stock Market: Part XXXVIII This is getting old. Walking our dog around Newport yesterday, my daughter said how weird it feels seeing all the shops and restaurants empty. We walk the same route regularly and have for years. We never stop at the shops and restaurants, but it feels good imagining what’s going on inside. I didn’t want to go down this road with you this morning, but will we ever get back to business as usual? You and I know a lot of these restaurants can’t make the numbers work, and staffing is an issue at least until the end of July when unemployment … [Read more...]
