OK, some updates for you from Your Survival Guy to clear the decks. The new Grady White is in (engines too) and ready for delivery. It’s a Canyon 306 with twin Yamaha 300s. The name: Tom Sawyer. I’ll send you pics next week. Here’s how to buy a boat. Had lunch with clients yesterday here in Newport, RI overlooking the water on a beautiful June afternoon. We’ve been working together now for twenty years. Over that time, the relationship has expanded, through referrals, to six other relationships with their friends and family. If you feel someone you care about would like to talk with … [Read more...]
Get Out the Map, Make a Plan, and MAKE IT HAPPEN
OK, it’s a busy summer. What can I say? Deal with it? OK, fine. Here’s what I’m doing. You know I’ve enjoyed my training at Sig Sauer Academy in Epping, New Hampshire. It’s about a two-hour drive. Nothing major. I’m up and out by 5:30 am and back by 7:30 pm. No big deal. It’s a staycation for me. No planes, trains, and rental automobiles. Take a look at a map of your neck of the woods. Where could you go within a four-hour radius? Action Line: The hard part about going to Sig Sauer, deep-sea fishing, skiing, hiking, or any other trip that requires a little planning is getting out the … [Read more...]
If You Have a Plan, I Believe You’ll Get to Where You Want to Go
When Your Survival Guy was 12-years old, my family traveled across the country in a 21-foot Winnebago Brave. Winnebago was on to something with the name because we saw the country all right, including the major national and state parks. But we also saw a lot of gas stations and even a few friends for an unexpected, extended stay in Cincinnati, OH. But that’s what’s great about RVing. You remember stuff you never planned on seeing. When we were “stuck” in Cincinnati, we went on a riverboat, played Wiffle ball, went to the club pool, and to the Kings Island amusement park where we rode “The … [Read more...]
Your Pictures from the Road
Your Survival Guy loves getting your pictures from the road. Here’s one and a video sent yesterday by clients from Louisiana on the road again far away from home. Action Line: Get out there and see the world. If you have a plan, I believe you’ll get to where you want to go. … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy: Make Your Bed and The Hero Code
Earlier this year, Your Survival Guy received two books and a note from a long-time client. We’ve been working together now for what will be 20-years come August 2023. That’s an eternity in this field of work where “what have you done for me lately?” can rule the day. But that’s the nature of the beast, and my job is to help protect my customers from the dangers trying to separate them from their money that lurk around every dark corner. This is hardball. Years ago, my client decided to eschew the pressures of Christmas cards and gifts and to send his thanks at his own “intentional” pace. … [Read more...]
LOOKING FOR LIBERTY: Retirees Revive Rural America
You know Your Survival Guy is passionate about helping hard-working Americans achieve a “liberty retirement” in a Super State. A Liberty Retirement means maintaining a strong standard of living, even after retirement, in a state where the government looks at you as a customer to be served, not as a piggy bank to raid. Thanks to the 2020 census, it’s easy to see just how many retirees are actively pursuing their own liberty retirement plans, and the impact they’re making on rural America. As Matt Murray notes in The Wall Street Journal’s 10 Point email: Retirees are helping swell the … [Read more...]
Kill the Death Tax
States taxing death are hurting themselves, writes Regina M. Egea, president of the Garden State Initiative, a New Jersey-based independent research and educational organization. Ms. Egea's state, New Jersey, is one where assets are taxed upon death. At Real Clear Policy, she explains how detrimental policies like New Jersey's can be: As a Founding Father and inventor, Benjamin Franklin was a visionary without peer in his time. His famous utterance “nothing is certain except death and taxes” could easily apply to New Jersey in 2022, as residents of one of the highest taxed states in the Union … [Read more...]
See Your Survival Guy’s Super States on $1 a Day
You may remember last month when I wrote to you about my clients who traveled around the country, paying $1 a day to rent/move a Winnebago from the factory to a dealer in New York. They had three weeks to drive around in the meantime and made the most of it. Here’s a summary of their trip, and additional costs. You can’t see Your Survival Guy’s Super States for much less than this. 21 days Nashville Natchez Trace Parkway New Orleans Gulf Coast MS and AL Southern Georgia Okefenokee Swamp GA Savanna GA Charleston SC Friends in Richmond, VA Eastern Shore of … [Read more...]
Your Retirement Life: Make Retirement an Unforgettable Adventure
Your Survival Guy had a couple of meetings at our Newport, RI office Monday. In the first one, we talked about the resilience of dividend-paying stocks in times like these and about a recent extended stay in Florida fishing and enjoying the outdoors. In the second one, we talked about the importance of dividends during inflationary times and their steady stream of income. They just got back from Capitol Reef National Park and said it’s their favorite one of all. You can check it out here. Action Line: Everyone deserves an unforgettable adventure, whether it's a perfect day in Capitol … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy Fishes the Flats Off Key West
When we arrived at the Stock Island marina, just north of Key West, we were anxious. Like the feeling you get when you’re driving to a ski mountain. You’re excited. You’re listening to music. Talking. Then, out of nowhere, you see the steep slopes, the crowds, and you get that feeling in your stomach where it’s too late to turn around. A week earlier, I called Captain Ryan Erickson (referred to me by a client) and asked if he would take us fishing. “Yeah,” he said. “You’re timing is good. Just got in town from my season guiding in Colombia. I’ll have the boat set up by Thursday. See you … [Read more...]
