Tom, a friend of mine, recently sent me an email about what he called the four pillars of health: “Sleep, eating, movement and stress management.”
The email was in response to my post on the importance of exercise, Your Retirement Life: Do Something.
Tom attached to the email an article from The New York Times about how exercise is the closest thing there is to a wonder drug. What struck me most of all was when he called a pair of shoes and regular walking “the cheapest health insurance there is.”
Earlier this year Fidelity estimated that the average retired couple would spend $280,000 on health care and medical expenses in retirement. Investing in yourself with exercise and Tom’s four pillars is a great way to let you spend more of that money enjoying retirement rather than at the doctor’s office.
Here’s what Tom wrote:
After reading your article today I thought you may enjoy this article I have saved from a few years ago. Even if its from the New York Times:)
A pair of shoes and regular walking is the cheapest health insurance there is. And then consider the fact that socialization is the number one
predictor of longevity ahead of all self help factors. That’s why Buffet can drink 6 cherry cokes a day:)
One of the best selling factors for chiropractic care is its ability to help people continue to be functional and active especially coupled with the four health
pillars: Sleep, eating, movement and stress management!
You cannot buy health from a bottle!
P.S. The best time of the year is here: Fall fishing, waterfowl, upland and big game hunting:)
From The New York Times:
Closest Thing to a Wonder Drug? Try Exercise
If the effects of exercise could be put in a pill and prescribed, it would be rightly hailed as an almost miraculous cure. So get off the couch.
