In times of nervousness, Americans buy guns, and in many cases, handguns. When it appeared in 2012 that the Obama administration would push through harsh gun control measures, Americans bought handguns in droves. In 2015 and 2016, it was a similar situation, with Americans buying pistols in response to calls for gun control.
Then, during COVID, when Americans were stressed and had little to do inside, they again purchased a lot of pistols.
Since COVID, handgun sales had been falling every month until March of this year, the first month of National Instant Criminal Background Check growth (a proxy of gun sales) since August of 2021 for handguns.
What does that mean? Handgun sales may have just hit their natural bottom, or maybe Americans are feeling stressed. Or perhaps it’s just that record-high tax refunds have put cash in Americans’ pockets, and they enjoy spending that cash on firearms. Whatever the cause, Americans are responding by exercising their Second Amendment rights.
