Some areas of Cuba’s power grid have been restored after a nationwide blackout put its population in the dark. The Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council (OSAC) put out a bulletin on the issue, explaining:
Event: Nationwide Power Outage including Havana
At 1:54 p.m. local time, there was a disconnection of the national electrical grid resulting in a complete power outage across Cuba which includes the Havana metropolitan area. There is no information about when power will be restored.
Cuba’s national electrical grid is increasingly unstable and prolonged scheduled and unscheduled power outages are a daily occurrence across the country to include Havana. Outages affect water supply, lighting, refrigeration, and communications. Take precautions by conserving fuel, water, food, and mobile phone charge, and be prepared for significant disruption.
Power outages have reportedly caused unrest and anti-communist protests in Cuba.

Cuba’s power grid has come under increasing pressure after the Trump administration began a blockade of oil shipments to Cuba. Venezuela had been trading oil for medical personnel and other help from Cuba, but after the Trump administration arrested Nicolas Maduro, that relationship ended. Secretary of State Marco Rubio explained recently how that affected Cuba’s economy.
SECRETARY RUBIO: Cuba’s economy doesn’t work. It has survived on subsidies from the Soviet Union and now from Venezuela. They don’t get subsidies anymore so they’re in a lot of trouble. pic.twitter.com/wFeTOdGPvL

President Trump also recently discussed Cuba’s reliance on Venezuela.
🇺🇸🇨🇺 Trump on why Cuba’s days are numbered:
“The Castro regime was brutal, but they lived off Venezuela, and now they don’t.
They’re going to make a deal, or we’ll do it just as easy anyway.”
Venezuela was the lifeline.
With that gone, Cuba is running on borrowed time.… https://t.co/TBNy2444m8 pic.twitter.com/Ww4PgjXp6g

Action Line: The people of Cuba may not have the opportunity to prepare for power outages by installing generators and battery packs in their homes, but you do. Prepare your family to face outages. America is the land of plenty, and long outages are rare, but preparing ahead to face an extended outage could make a world of difference to your family.
