car-in-the-snowWinter is here, and with it comes snow and ice on the roads. Despite the inevitability of poor driving conditions, every year some drivers seem surprised by them and hit the roads unprepared to deal with the consequences.

Especially vulnerable are drivers in areas not used to snow and ice, such as the South Eastern states which were recently hit by a storm that hammered them with up to a foot of snow in areas of North Carolina and Virginia, and half a foot in areas of Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina. Road crews and drivers in those areas are simply unprepared for that type of weather.

Falling snow can be a beautiful, but it means dangerous conditions if you plan to head out on the road. Here are some tips and best practices that can help you stay safe and secure when driving in winter conditions.

Drive with your headlights on to improve visibility both ways

Avoid using cruise control – in adverse conditions, you want control

Be cautious on bridges, overpasses, etc. – they might be icy even if the roads are not

Avoid passing snow plows and sand trucks – drivers have limited visibility and the road in front may be unsafe

Know and practice how to drive in winter conditions – like braking on ice
