Cities across America run by Democratic politicians watched throughout 2020 and 2021 as leaders dismantled or demoralized police departments, and allowed criminals to run amok without consequences. Murder and violent crime rates have tragically begun to rise after decades of declines. Seattle is on course for a record-high number of homicides this year. Karina Vargas reports for KOMO:
The Seattle Police Department (SPD) is investigating three separate incidents that required the attention of homicide detectives over the Labor Day weekend.
There were two suspicious deaths on Sunday, and two adults and two children were found dead after a reported shooting and house fire in Seattle’s Wallingford neighborhood Saturday morning.
Officials with Crime Stoppers of Puget Sound and the Seattle Police Officers Guild (SPOG) both said those numbers are because criminals don’t fear consequences from police.
They no longer fear the police because they understand that the police are literally handcuffed for being able to effectively do our jobs. So, they’re emboldened,” said SPOG President Mike Solan.
There were 52 homicides in all of 2022.
With the investigations this weekend, the city of Seattle on track to pass last year’s homicide record. Jim Fuda with Crime Stoppers Puget Sound said this troubling record is also a result from the shortage of police officers that the SPD has been dealing with.
Officials with the SPOG estimate the department has lost around 600 officers since 2020.
Things aren’t any better in Chicago which suffered a wave of deadly shootings over Labor Day weekend. CBS Chicago reports:
At least six people were killed, and 36 others were hurt in shootings across Chicago during Labor Day weekend. The ages of the victims range from 6 to 53.
In Baltimore, another wave of deadly shootings took place. Tresia Bowles reports for 11 Alive:
An already violent weekend continued to get worse as Saturday progressed to Sunday this Labor Day weekend.
15 people were shot and six people died due to gunshot wounds.
One of the victims was Harrison Olvey, 25.
His cousin, Brad Olvey feels crime has been going up.
“It’s happening over and over, right here, in this area,” Brad said, “I’ve been here for almost 20 years. And it’s getting worse.”
