
Are you in “islanded mode?” No, I’m not talking about your next trip to Margaritaville; I’m talking about your battery backup system. A microgrid in islanded mode will work even while the main grid is down. This can work for your home microgrid, or for a massive data center relying on renewable energy and battery backups.
Science Direct explains islanded mode as follows:
In islanded mode, the MG (microgrid) is separated from the upstream distribution grid and provides a reliable power supply to consumers on the basis of DG bids. With the integration of a BESS (battery electric storage system) into the MG system, the reliability and efficiency of the system increases, and the system is able to smooth out power fluctuations in renewable energy generation. In emergency situations, such as the disengagement of the MG from the main grid due to faults at MV (medium voltage) networks, the MG operates autonomously in islanded mode with the help of DG (distributed generation) and the BESS to maintain its integrity [37,38]. The main aim is to control and maintain the voltage and frequency of the system. After islanding, the synchronization of the reconnection of the MG is achieved autonomously using frequency differences between the islanded mode and the utility grid [36,39–42]. Fig. 3 shows the configuration of the islanded mode of an MG with static switch for transition purposes.
