AVIATION PIONEER: Igor Sikorsky

A Sikorsky S-61L Mk II helicopter taxis on the runway at sunrise at Camp Leatherneck, Helmand province, Oct. 23. The S-61L Mk II is an improved version from the S-61L with more powerful engines, individual cargo bins, and enhanced vibration damping.

The VS-300 was America’s first practical and amphibious helicopter, created by Igor Sikorsky. In the video below, history enthusiasts at Dark Skies detail Sikorsky’s history. A friend wrote of the video:

If you want to see early helicopter development, this is cool. The first three minutes have a lot of other people’s attempts at something, but at about 2:45 you’ll see an early Sikrosky prototype. It is Sikorsky himself who is the test pilot. Notice that his crash helmet is his trademark fedora. Safety precautions … not what is required now! At about 3:30, the video starts really getting into Sikorsky development.
