Young’s Intelligence Report. “But if you have been with me over the years, you are keenly aware that it is indeed the combination of dividends, compound interest, perspective and patience that frames the message I deliver to you month after month. I do not change course. You can count … [Read more...]
Top Gun: Meeting Enemy FIRE Golfing in Key West
Originally posted on December 11, 2020. You don’t go to Key West to golf, but, if you’re in Key West and want to, then you’re in for a treat. There’s a great 18-hole, southernmost course just outside of Old Town KW. It’s just far enough to enjoy your chocolate croissant and con leche or to split a cuban mix from 5 Brothers on your drive. Now being a public/private course and the only one, it gets a lot of play. Tee times are required and if you’re a twosome you’ll soon be paired up into a foursome whether you like it or not. “Don’t worry,” I said to my son Owen between bites. “Meeting other … [Read more...]
Can We Still Afford the Riverboat Cruise?
Are you falling for the oldest trick in the book? Here’s how it reads. Managers today draw you in with low-cost index funds and past performance—not necessarily in that order. Then, once you’re in the door, they sell you on other stuff, like toxic variable annuities, until you’re blue in the face. It’s hard not to fall for the sales pitch. I get it. Here’s what happens. It’s Sunday morning. You don’t have a care in the world. Frank Sinatra is playing in the background. Life is good. Then you peel open the quarterly funds report in the Journal and look at the performance like a box score … [Read more...]

Your Retirement Life: To Where Will You Flee?
Your retirement life is sacred ground. You know my favorite advice, to your dismay, is to work as long as you can and put off retirement. That doesn’t mean you need to give up your dreams. You just need to be creative. Can you do remote work? Wherever you choose to go, familiarize yourself with my Super States, rent for a year to make sure it’s a good fit, and downsize. Don’t worry the kids will visit. Bankrate.com just came out with its annual ranking of the best places to retire, and you won't be surprised by the top three. Gun Sales in Rhode Island Are Way Up in 2021
Let’s talk guns. When Rhode Island’s largest newspaper has an article on guns, there’s always a liberal slant, so let’s get that out of the way first. In this article, “Gun Background Checks in R.I. Outpace 2020,” the expert the author relies upon is, at least to Your Survival Guy, suspect. Why? Two reasons: One, he’s an economist, and two, he’s a forecaster. That’s two strikes. And the third, the writer gives him the last word that reads like this (my emphasis): “In our analytical work, we repeatedly discover that the perception of insecurity, meaning, if I need the police, will they … [Read more...]
New! Super States and Your Island of Freedom
You understand you need food. You also understand food storage is hard. I know it’s a challenge for me. I’m good for about a week or two with what’s in my pantry. Then there’s another few months of freeze-dried stuff, which might make me feel like death, and then what? It’s just not an easy subject to tackle. And I’ve spent a lot of time thinking about it. I’m on the food thing again because of my recent experience described in, Oops! Your Survival Guy’s Encounter at the Grocery Store. Our food supply may be plentiful, but the workers moving the goods from farm to checkout are as fragile as … [Read more...]
Everyone Is Headed for South Florida, Flying Private
Private jet flights to and from South Florida have increased to record levels. This is a trend Your Survival Guy is following as the kids' inheritance is spent on keeping taxes low and the champagne cold. Private Jet Card Comparisons reports: Data from Tuvoli, a payment platform for private jet charter brokers and operators, shows South Florida private jet flights continue at a record clip, even as we head into the summer. So far in June, flights at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport are running 91.4% ahead of 2019 levels. As an example, during the first 23 days of June two years ago, the … [Read more...]
Shaquille O’Neal Blasts Lebron James’s Arrogance
Good for Shaq. Yet another reason why Your Survival Guy has given up on the NBA. Brie Stimson reports for Fox News: Shaquille O’Neal called out LeBron James this week after the Los Angeles Lakers player faulted the NBA for starting the season too soon, in his view causing a spate of players’ injuries. "When you’re living in a world where 40 million people have been laid off and I’m making $200 million, you won’t get no complaining from me," O’Neal, a former Lakers star himself, told CNBC on Tuesday. "I’d play back to back to back to back to back." The normal NBA season ends in June and … [Read more...]
Oops! Your Survival Guy’s Encounter at the Grocery Store
In my conversations with you, you're telling me about the impact in your neck of the woods of the Great Resignation. You're telling me about the "Help Wanted" signs, especially in vacation destinations, where many of you live. Help Wanted signs are everywhere in Newport, RI. More on that in a minute. First, I want to share with you a conversation I had with a client who has a front-row seat to the M&A (mergers and acquisitions) world. He told me about a deal he's involved in right now. "E.J.," he said, "for the first time, we're buying a company for its workers, not its client base." … [Read more...]
