I received this great email yesterday:
Our Porsche is a 1986 911 Turbo which I purchased new 30 years ago. It’s in great condition and we love taking it on the terrific driving roads in the Rocky Mountain West.
This past weekend a neighbor couple, in their 360 Ferrari, joined my wife and me for a driving weekend from Jackson Hole to Cody, Wyoming and Red Lodge, Montana.
After a great two days on the road we started home over the 11,000 ft. Beartooth Pass from Red Lodge at mid-morning on Sunday, just missing an early season snow storm that caused the closure of Beartooth Pass later in the day.
Following a beautiful drive through Yellowstone National Park, we exited the park through the south gate and soon entered Teton National Park on US Highway 89/191. Just as we were entering TNP, we noticed what was described by our local paper as an “inexorable” wind that reached sustained speeds of 40mph. This was enough to spread a previously contained fire six miles and 6,000 acres in just six hours.
We could see the smoke and flames ahead and knew from previous experience that the road would soon be closed which meant a very long 200 mile detour to get home. We made a fast pass into the smoke clouds and thought we were ok until trees along the road exploded and we were engulfed in thick smoke and debris that we could hear hitting our car. The excitement lasted just a few minutes, but we didn’t relax until we got home and confirmed that there was no damage to the paint on our cars.
All in all, a wild ride for us retirees.”
