The Market for Quarterbacks Looks Bullish to Me

As you can see below, it’s good to be a quarterback in the NFL. Here are some of the top NFL salaries at quarterback position this year:

It will be interesting to see what type of contract the 49ers offer former Patriots backup Jimmy Garoppollo. Keeping him on the Patriots’ roster, in the end, was too expensive—to the tune of twenty some odd million dollars a year—to wear a headset.

OverTheCap.com’s Jason Fitzgerald (as pointed out by Ben Volin of the Boston Globe) believes that the 49ers will likely get Garoppolo for around $21 million next year which is what Brock Osweiler got from the Texans last year. Garoppolo will probably want $26 million or $27 million since, wait for it…Colin Kaepernick got $24.8 million in his first year with the 49ers in 2014.

What could Garoppolo get for three years? “Osweiler got $55 million and Ryan Tannehill got $57 million, and Garoppolo is likelier to fall in that range than the next highest range, $66 million for Joe Flacco and $67 million for Eli Manning,” writes Volin.

From where I sit, as an investment advisor, that’s a lot of money, no doubt, to throw a football. But, time and time again, we read about how this or that NFL player lost all his money (Google it if you want some examples).

If you tune into an NFL game with someone you want to teach a thing or two about money, tell them this: It’s not how much you make. It’s how much you keep.
