Are you about to say, “Honey, I think it’s time I retire,” to your spouse? If so, you need to be able to answer some follow-up questions. Some of the most important steps you need to take when preparing to retire have been collected by AARP, and here’s a list:
- Define your retirement
- Take stock of your ‘assets’ — including hidden ones
- Evaluate your health
- Create a retirement budget you can live with
- Decide when to start Social Security
- Decide if you want (or need) to work
- Network — online and offline
- Find new ways to cut your expenses
- Plan for the unexpected
- Stick to the plan and revisit it
