Are you about to say, “Honey, I think it’s time I retire,” to your spouse? If so, you need to be able to answer some follow-up questions. Some of the most important steps you need to take when preparing to retire have been collected by AARP, and here’s a list:

  1. Define your retirement
  2. Take stock of your ‘assets’ — including hidden ones
  3. Evaluate your health
  4. Create a retirement budget you can live with
  5. Decide when to start Social Security
  6. Decide if you want (or need) to work
  7. Network — online and offline
  8. Find new ways to cut your expenses
  9. Plan for the unexpected
  10. Stick to the plan and revisit it
