UPDATE 6.6.22: Senate Democrats, led by Chris Murphy (CT), are working up a new round of gun control legislation aimed at law-abiding Americans. On the Republican side, retiring Senator Pat Toomey is working with Murphy to push the legislation forward. Toomey has worked with Democrats on anti-gun legislation in the past. The Daily Mail reports:
Like Murphy Toomey expressed some support for expanded background checks and red flag laws, but cast the latter as more of a choice for individual states – something other Republicans signaling openness to gun reform have also stated. However, they left the door open to talks on how the federal government could incentivize the change.
As for background checks, he recalled his work with West Virginia Democrat Sen. Joe Manchin on an expansion of the system which ultimately did not pass.
‘I certainly hope we’re going to have an expansion of background checks. Senator Manchin and I have been working on this for a long time. We’ve tried to establish that at least for commercial sales of firearms, there ought to be a background check,’ Toomey said.
He added that striking the right balance was more of a ‘moving target’ this time.
‘We’re still in discussions, and we are still trying to figure out exactly what mechanism is going to enable us to get the votes that we would need. So I can’t be precise about that,’ Toomey said.
In the meantime, Americans are watching the events in Canada with trepidation, and remembering Joe Biden’s words about putting Beto O’Rourke in charge of his gun control efforts.

Well, maybe not silent as more and more Americans are speaking out to defend their Second Amendment rights. As the recent ATF report reveals, this group is locked and loaded.
Paul Bedard details the report at The Washington Examiner, writing:
New federal data shows that there are 422.9 million firearms in circulation, or about 1.2 guns for every person in the country.
What’s more, despite years of criticism of modern “assault-style” rifles such as the AR-15 and AK-47, there are a record 17.7 million in private hands, proving that it is the most popular gun around.
And last year alone, the arms industry produced 8.1 billion rounds of ammunition.
The figures are from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives and were crunched by the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the gun industry trade group.
“These figures show the industry that America has a strong desire to continue to purchase firearms for lawful purposes,” said Joe Bartozzi, president of the NSSF, in a statement releasing the group’s new report.
“The modern sporting rifle continues to be the most popular centerfire rifle sold in America today and is clearly a commonly owned firearm with more than 17 million in legal private ownership today. The continued popularity of handguns demonstrates a strong interest by Americans to protect themselves and their homes and to participate in the recreational shooting sports,” he said.
In response to nonstop attacks on their Second Amendment rights, Americans have decided to get their guns and their training now. In doing so, they have turned themselves into a silent army.
