You may have noticed that Europe is gearing up for war. Military spending budgets are rising, and recruitment (voluntary and otherwise) is growing too. Now the European Union is asking its citizens to have 72 hours of food and essentials on hand in case Russia invades.
In its recently released EU Preparedness Union Strategy (read the entire document below), the EU emphasized promoting population preparedness, including:
- Encourage the public to adopt practical measures, such as maintaining essential supplies for a minimum of 72 hours in emergencies.
- Integrate preparedness lessons into school curricula and introduce an EU Preparedness Day.
The European Commissioner for Preparedness and Crisis Management Hadja Lahbib also took to X.com with a (somewhat corny) video encouraging EU citizens to have their essentials in a bag and ready to go.
Today, the EU launches its new #Preparedness Strategy.
“Ready for anything” — this must be our new European way of life. Our motto and #hashtag. pic.twitter.com/fA1z8ZvMDA

Despite the cheesy delivery, Lahbib’s advice wasn’t wrong. Medicines, documents, food, water, basic tools, and other essentials are great to have at hand when you need them.
