When House Democrats saw their election-night hopes of a “Blue Wave” fading, they placed their last hopes on flipping Indiana’s 5th Congressional District. Republican candidate Victoria Spartz, an immigrant from Ukraine, made sure that didn’t happen. Jill Sheridan of WFYI Indianapolis reports:
Republican Victoria Spartz held a press conference Thursday morning, following confirmation yesterday that she was elected to represent Indiana’s 5th Congressional District.
Spartz will now go to Washington D.C., after a close contest against Democrat Chrisitina Hale. The race took more than a day to call.
Spartz said she trusts in the process.
“Because it’s extremely important for people to have trust in our election outcomes,” Spartz said. “It’s extremely important for our republic.”
She said, when she came here from the Ukraine 20 years ago, she would never have imagined this future.
“But this is the beauty of our republic,” Spartz said.
The 5th district makes up a diverse area, including most of Hamilton, Tipton, Madison and Grant counties and the northern part of Marion County. Spartz said the Hoosiers she talked to all want the same things.
“We want to have wonderful future for our children. We want to have jobs and good economy. We want to have affordable health care and good education,” Spartz said.
The former accountant and business owner will take up her new position in January. She’ll join a relatively young freshman class that adds more women to Congress.
