You know a big storm is about to hit the East Coast. If you’re in the area, do you have a plan?
Planning for big storms can take a wide variety of forms. From as little as storing some water, to maintaining your generator, putting some power away in your pantry, checking your homeowner’s insurance plan for coverage, and preparing the storm shelter with food and light. There’s a lot to consider.
- Where would you go in your house to be the safest you can be? The basement? Under the table? The bathroom? Consider your options.
- How will you prepare pets and farm animals?
- Do you need to take care of neighbors or others in your building?
- Where would you go if forced to evacuate? Is there enough gas in your car to get there? You don’t want to be trying to get gas at the same time as everyone else in your city. Put some in a can at home.
- If you need to leave your house to potential disaster, what are you bringing with you? Are your important documents ready to go at a moment’s notice? Will your car fit your entire family and pets?
- How will you communicate with your family if the telephone networks are down? Do you have a satellite backup?
- What about food and medicine for your family and pets?
Some of these things aren’t easy to think about. Considering the destruction of your own home isn’t fun. But it’s better to have a plan now for dealing with it than to simply react and suffer your way through the aftermath.
