Is the Philadelphia Looting Spree the Wake-up Call America Needs?

Crime has ravaged businesses across America since 2020, when radical politicians gave looters the green light to turn America into a warzone. Since then, the nation has watched with horror as roving gangs have cleaned out popular locations like Nordstroms and Apple Stores and even little gas stations. For two days now, America has watched as looting in Philadelphia has gone to a new level. Are the shocking scenes of criminality in Philadelphia the wake-up call America needs to do something about this behavior? Or will this simply slip into the news cycle and become another missed opportunity for change? ABC6 reports:

Pockets of looting continued at Philadelphia businesses early Thursday morning, including a Fine Wine & Good Spirits store in the Crescentville section.

Police arrested two people near Adams Avenue and East Tabor Road at about 2:30 a.m. after spotting them loading up a car with liquor. The state store was not boarded up.

Officers said the two thieves were just helping themselves to what was left.

The Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board previously closed all 48 of its Philadelphia retail locations and one in suburban Cheltenham due to looting on Tuesday night.

At least 18 state-run liquor stores were broken into, officials said Wednesday.

No employees were hurt Tuesday night, but “some were understandably shaken,” said liquor board spokesperson Shawn Kelly.

The stores were “closed in the interest of employee safety and while we assess the damage and loss that occurred,” Kelly said.

Officials told Action News via email that a decision to reopen any stores on Thursday has not been made.

The chaos started around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday after numerous 911 calls stated a large group, possibly as many as 100, moving through Center City Philadelphia.

Other stores in and around the city were ransacked, including Lululemon, Foot Locker, and an Apple store.

People appeared to have organized efforts on social media, according to John Stanford, the interim police commissioner.
