You know Your Survival Guy is a proponent of the Rich Man story by the late great Richard Russell. I’ve spent a career studying investments ever since I graduated from Babson College in 1994. What I can tell you is that what is true today is what was true then. But as much as I write that to you, only you know if you have what it takes. The fact we’re spending time together today tells me you have what it takes. Many of you are already rich men and women beyond your wildest dreams.
OK, what it takes is easy to understand: save ‘til it hurts, work for as long as you can, and put compound interest on your side—the miracle of time is involved in all three. And here’s the thing: you don’t need to be a hero to make all three work. You do need to be disciplined, and you need to be able to stick to your plan. That can be a difficult task, especially with all the noise of the markets today.
Your definition of being healthy, wealthy, and wise is probably not that different from the next guy. At the end of the day, it’s the billionaires who say they would be just as happy with far less money as long as they have family, friends, food, shelter, and health. Easy for them to say.
Your wealth is your wealth. You made decisions to become successful. You did without so you can enjoy the retirement life you so richly deserve. You understand you need to avoid the big mistakes to be an investor, not a speculator, and invest like a rich man who doesn’t need the markets. The way you do that is to have the right asset mix for you, not anyone else. But understanding you isn’t easy. That’s where I come in. I can take an unemotional approach to your money. Something you may not be able to do alone.
Action Line: When you have your investment life figured out, a lot of other pieces fall into place. I can tell you this because when we talk, we spend more time talking about your retirement life rather than your retirement investments. Email me at ejsmith@yoursurvivalguy.com.
