You have already witnessed the troubling mayoralty of Zohran Mamdani in New York City. Now, another socialist is on the way to becoming mayor in a nearby city, Providence, RI. Erick Mack reports for Fox News:
Rhode Island State Rep. David Morales, a 27-year-old democratic socialist endorsed by Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., defeated Providence Mayor Brett Smiley in the Democratic primary Wednesday night, ousting the incumbent after one term.
If Morales wins the general election, he will be Providence’s youngest mayor in history.
“Few believed that a 27-year-old democratic socialist could ever, few believed that we could ever take on big money, corporate real estate interests and endless attack ads – and we took them on and we won,” Morales said in his victory speech, delivered partly in Spanish, after winning by roughly 8 points (54%-46%).
Morales’s campaign website reads like an assault on landlords, including a plan to cap rent hikes at 4%, affordable home requirements on all new housing projects, fees on corporate landlords, and increased scrutiny of absentee landlords.
