Legendary ski filmmaker Warren Miller died last night at his home on Orcas Island, WA. He was 93. He will be missed.
When I was growing up in Mattapoisett, MA the closest mountains were around a four hour drive away. We would go skiing on long-weekends and most February vacations.
I remember the ski trips in junior high with the ski club. It was my first taste of freedom.
Before each season it was a big deal when a Warren Miller movie came to town. It was usually shown around October at our junior high school.
I remember leaving the auditorium with my friends and how pumped up we were for the ski season. Warren Miller had a special gift for bringing the skiing lifestyle to the screen. He had the best skiers in the world working for him. They made you feel like you could ski like them. They made it look easy.
Skiing has done so much for my family. Yes, it requires patience as a parent to get your kids up and running. But once you do, it’s one of the few sports you can enjoy as a family.
Warren Miller was a master at selling. He fueled the anticipation your feel before your next trip to the mountains. No one has sold more lift tickets than Warren Miller.
Warren Miller on skiing:
“If I ask anybody who learned to ski after the age of five, they can remember their first day of skiing—what the weather was like, who they went with, what they had for lunch. I believe that’s because that first day on skis was the first day of total freedom in their life.”
“Exactly one day in your life your kid will ski as good as you do. The next day, he’ll ski better than you.”
“If you don’t do it this year, you’ll be one year older when you do.”
