Wow! That was fun…
At Fansided, Scott Rogust details the reaction to Pete Alonso’s Home Run Derby performance, writing:
Twitter freaked out after watching New York Mets star Pete Alonso hit 35 homers in the first-round of the 2021 Home Run Derby.
New York Mets star first baseman Pete Alonso never got his opportunity to defend him Home Run Derby crown last year, as there were no All-Star Game festivities due to the coronavirus pandemic. But Alonso has the chance to retain his throne on Monday night inside Coors Field in Denver, and in the first round, he made the most of it.
Alonso was matched up against Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez in the first round of the Home Run Derby. The Mets slugger stepped into the batter’s box first, and he crushed a record 35 home runs! Twitter, of course, lost their minds watching the home run barrage provided by Alonso.

Absolutely electric Home Run Derby first round at Coors Field for Pete Alonso, who hit 35 total homers — far more than in any individual round when he won the whole thing two years ago. Alonso’s top round that year was 23 homers.
Tall order for Salvador Pérez to match.

“Why did Pete Alonso bring the old guy?”

“Uh… can I use that guy?”

Pete Alonso is the man. None of that “it’s gonna mess up my swing” nonsense. Just get me in the Derby as many times as possible so I can mash a shit ton of homers every year for the people.

What a way to set the tone for the remainder of the Home Run Derby.
