Republicans in blue states where citizens are taxed to the max are looking to spread the pain of their own mismanaged state governments to the rest of the country by jacking SALT tax deductions to the max. Like table salt, a little SALT deduction can enhance the “Big Beautiful Bill” that Republicans are trying to pass through the House, but too much will make it inedible.
Economist Stephen Moore has come out hard against the SALT deduction. He explained on X.com that 75% of SALT deductions go to blue states:
Why won’t Republicans cut blue state tax subsidies?
Despite ZERO Democratic support for the Trump tax bill, GOP leaders continue to champion the SALT deduction, disproportionately benefiting blue states—75% of SALT deductions flow to these areas.

He discussed the issue on Fox Business:
$0 is the right SALT deduction!
Blue states shouldn’t get a pass for high taxes & poor services.
It’s outrageous that SALT Republicans might derail the Big Beautiful Bill, risking tax hikes for 85% of us just to benefit 15%! pic.twitter.com/XAkyC1NMfH

The Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget explained via X.com that the so-called SALT Caucus, the handful of blue state Republicans attempting to extend SALT deductions to millionaires and billionaires, are asking for more tax relief than all other proposed tax relief in the bill.
🚨🧂🚨 The SALT Caucus reportedly endorsed increasing the deduction cap for single filers to $62,000 and joint filers to $124,000.
Worth noting: This would deliver 60% of the benefits to the rich making over $500k while swamping the other new tax cuts in the reconciliation bill. pic.twitter.com/taojA8TW2F
