Is Elon Musk Right about the Apocalypse?

Words that come to mind when you hear the name Elon Musk are Tesla, electric cars, solar, batteries, rockets, futurist…but prepper? It turns out Musk believes the Apocalypse is nigh, and that’s why he’s developed a plan called “Making Humans a Multi-Planetary Species,”—in other words colonizing Mars.

Musk writes:

I think there are really two fundamental paths. History is going to bifurcate along two directions. One path is we stay on Earth forever, and then there will be some eventual extinction event. I do not have an immediate doomsday prophecy, but eventually, history suggests, there will be some doomsday event. The alternative is to become a space-bearing civilization and a multi-planetary species, which I hope you would agree is the right way to go.

Most people today, including Mr. Musk, don’t have access to a rocket ship that can take them to Mars. But most disasters aren’t the Apocalypse either.

You should place your priority on doing what you can to prepare for the disasters you are more likely to meet in a day; muggings, car accidents, fires, power outages, and others.

Do you have enough food and water to get your family through a few days without power or water? If your home were to burn down, are you financially prepared to live somewhere else until it is rebuilt? Are you physically, mentally and emotionally prepared to defend yourself against an aggressor?

For many people, the answer to these questions is a flat no. Without forethought, training, and preparation, you leave yourself at risk of being overwhelmed by one of these small catastrophes, let alone the apocalyptic scenario Mr. Musk envisions. Leave the Mars colonization to him, get yourself ready for living a long, healthy, happy life here on earth by analyzing the risks and preparing to mitigate, or eliminate them.
