OK. Here’s the deal. You don’t know how you’re going to feel in retirement. There I said it. Plain and simple. It’s an unknown, unknown. Sure, you think you’ll know how you’ll feel. But thinking is a whole lot different than living. Let me explain. Your Survival Guy spends hours each day talking with investors just like you. You tell me you’re feeling the pressure. You did your job. You raised your family. Now it’s a whole different ballgame. The truth is, once college is paid for and the kids are out of the house, the pressure cooker starts whistling. The force of the world comes … [Read more...]
Two Ways You Can Make Time Stand Still
Your Survival Guy survived a weeklong liver cleanse, and I’m here to write about it. OK, it was a five-day deal. I made it four and three-quarters. I can’t say I recommend it, but here I am, wondering how this week will go. So far, so good. Now I’m thinking about every little bite and sip I take. But hey, a little bit of self-reflection goes a long way. That’s the beauty of a reset. If you want to make time stand still, dear reader, and not let life pass you by, then do a liver cleanse. Talk about watching paint dry. Five days will feel like an eternity. All in the name of prolonging … [Read more...]
Warning: Overnight Law-Abiding Citizens Are Now Felons and More…
As I wrote to you yesterday, big government is coming after you. Today, law abiding Rhode Islanders who own a gun with a magazine that can hold more than ten rounds are felons. Wait a second. What just happened? Last June, RI’s General Assembly passed a law banning all magazines holding more than ten rounds. The governor signed it into law. There was a six month grace period to turn in the “illegal” mags to local law enforcement (which, by the way, also makes you a target because they’re keeping records of those who turn them in, in case the law is overturned and you want them back). The … [Read more...]
“Do We Have Anything to Watch Tonight?”
Your Survival Guy and Girl are watching The Last of Us, streaming on HBO Max, an apocalyptic thriller drama based on a popular video game I never played. Then, one of its lead actors, Pedro Pascal (from Mandalorian and Game of Thrones), hosted Saturday Night Live the other weekend, and that caught my attention. How Your Survival Guy got into the show is in a manner that’s become all too frequent—in a panic. Listening to Alison Krauss while getting dinner ready, she asked: “Do we have anything to watch tonight?” I quickly pulled up Rotten Tomatoes and said this show gets a 97% and … [Read more...]
DeSantis: ESG “Dead on Arrival in Florida”
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has warned fund companies that ESG investing is "dead on arrival" in Florida. Watch the governor explain Florida's position on ESG: ESG is a threat to the American economy and the individual freedoms that our country is built upon. It is dead on arrival in Florida. pic.twitter.com/ZqrdklbUvW — Ron DeSantis (@GovRonDeSantis) February 13, 2023 You know Your Survival Guy wants you to avoid ESG, and to avoid governors and financial professionals who would use your money to pursue their political aims. Read more about ESG here: Anti-Carbon Crusaders in … [Read more...]
Time to See Bonds from the Mountaintop
Looking at this chart is like viewing the Tetons from the Grand Canyon. America is finally climbing out of the low-rate canyon and giving bond investors a peak from the mountaintop. Opportunity awaits when you’re ready to talk. … [Read more...]
How Long Have You Been in the Investment Business?
“How long have you been in the investment business?” he asked. “Most of my adult life,” I said. “Did you know when you were my age (18) what you wanted to do?” “Not really. I went to business school at Babson College, worked at Fidelity Investments, and I’ve been here for 25 years.” “That’s cool,” he said. “My grandpa and grandma tell me all about you guys.” ………… Here’s the longer version. Growing up, we always talked about business at home. But it wasn’t about money. My dad would talk about interactions with customers he’d had that day, and because this was pre-internet, … [Read more...]
Yes, Your Children Are Listening to You
Dear reader, You may not realize this, but your kids/grandkids are listening to you. How does Your Survival Guy know? Because they tell me. More on that in a minute. Yesterday, for example, I spoke with a daughter and son-in-law of yours and, later in the day, a grandson. The first conversation was focused on traveling along the road to saving for retirement, while the other was about starting out a lifetime of saving and building a career. “But we don’t have enough to meet your minimum,” they always say. “There is no minimum for you,” I say. “Once a member of your family is in the … [Read more...]
What Your Survival Guy Invested in Today
You Survival Guy made a not-so-insignificant six-figure investment this morning in a mix of stocks and bonds. It’s a balanced approach, with roughly one-third stocks and two-thirds bonds yielding close to four percent. This is the type of mix I like for my retired clients, and for me, at age 50, it’s time to have more bonds in my portfolio, and this accomplishes that. The other motivation is you need to strike. You must take action when opportunities are right in front of you. Don’t fall victim to inertia. Whenever I have a large pile of cash to deploy, my first question is, “What can I … [Read more...]
You Invest, They Win: FTX Edition
Cryptocurrency speculators who trusted Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX exchange ended up funding the alleged fraudster's political dabbling to the tune of $40 million in donations to mostly Democratic lawmakers. Now, FTX is trying to pay back as many of the people it owes money to as possible, and it wants politicians to return their donations. The NY Post's Paul Best reports: Bankman-Fried, the founder and former CEO of FTX, made upwards of $40 million in donations to mostly Democratic lawmakers and groups during the 2022 election cycle. FTX wants that money back by Feb. 28, warning recipients … [Read more...]
