After Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, I have followed along closely, taking note of survival implications. The storm was a real world worst-case-scenario and unfortunately thousands were caught in its path. The Economist reports that Maria was America's deadliest storm since 1900. They write: WITH vicious winds gusting at 120mph, the hurricane that made landfall in Puerto Rico on September 20th 2017 was expected to be deadly. Hurricane Maria wrought destruction across the island, cutting power, communications and drinking water to nearly every home. Yet most of the 3.3m islanders … [Read more...]
Raimondo Makes Schools Less Safe
Governor Gina Raimondo of Rhode Island announced yesterday that she was banning "all firearms, except those carried by police officers, from public schools and grounds in Rhode Island." The functional outcome of this decree will be to prevent concealed carry permit holders from carrying on school grounds. Concealed carry permit holders in Rhode Island are highly vetted with background checks, qualification tests, psychological exams in some cases, references and the imprimatur of the Attorney General or their local police chief. Removing these trained, armed, upstanding members of the … [Read more...]
I stand with J.D. Martinez for the Second Amendment
The liberal Boston media is having a fit over a pro-Second Amendment Instagram post back in 2012 by slugger J.D. Martinez. I stand with J.D. Alex Speier of The Boston Globe writes: J.D. Martinez said he had no intention of offending anyone or wading into contentious political waters when, in 2013, he posted on Instagram a quote that has been falsely attributed to Adolf Hitler by anti-gun control advocates. Martinez’s inaccurate quote was, “To conquer a Nation, First disarm it’s (sic) citizens.” “This is why I will always stay strapped! #thetruth,” Martinez wrote in the … [Read more...]
Corporations Shower Right-to-Work Kentucky with Investment
Most companies looking to invest their dollars in new production facilities simply aren't willing to risk the inefficiencies and disruption caused by forced unionism, and so they build in Right-to-Work states. Kentucky, says Craig Bouchard, CEO of Braidy Industries, wasn't even on the company's list of possible destinations until it enacted a Right-to-Work law last year. Since then Braidy has begun construction on a $1.5 billion mill that will employ 600 people producing aluminum for the aerospace, defense, and automotive industries. The National Right to Work Committee, which pushed for … [Read more...]
My Favorite Book this Summer: The Killer Angels
Recommendations can be tricky today. With so much to watch on Netflix alone, it’s hard to know which recommendations from friends and relatives to watch first. Then there are recommendations for books. "E.J. you have to read The Killer Angels," a friend expressed in a way I knew I had to read it. I’m glad I did, and I appreciate Ken Burns' quote on the on the back cover saying it changed his life. I’ve been hooked on the Civil War for the last three months now, and want to share with you a wonderful summary of how Michael Shaara’s book captures the heartbreak of it all. Shaara’s son Jeff … [Read more...]
What is the NRA?
The NRA is America's largest gun rights organization, and does more than any group to protect the Second Amendment. I'm a lifetime member. If you would like to support the NRA here's a bit about how. WHAT IS THE NRA? The NRA is America’s preeminent gun rights organization, made up of nearly five million members. Together, we fight and win the toughest battles for the Second Amendment, all while offering the best firearms educational programs in the country. Every day, the NRA fights back against politicians, judges, and bureaucrats who want to regulate, restrict, and ultimately, destroy … [Read more...]
Africa Still Great in the Summer of ’18
Toto’s late drummer Jeff Porcaro was a genius at setting a groove—he’s the backbone for the song Africa—as I wrote to you in 2011. This Summer, Weezer’s cover of Africa has hit its stride. I love how drummer Pat Wilson interprets Porcaro’s groove and makes it his own. Enjoy. … [Read more...]
Escape NYC, Go to Margaritaville
One thing I’ll never forget about our trip to NYC this year was the credit card bill a few weeks later. NYC ain’t cheap. Don’t get me wrong, it was an awesome trip, but I’m hardly surprised by this article on plummeting luxury apartment sales. "When the luxury market slowdown began in 2016, brokers blamed it on political uncertainty.” reports the WSJ. "More recently they said buyers were hesitating because of federal tax changes that may increase the cost of home ownership and reduce the deductibility of New York’s relatively high tax burdens." Yes I'm disappointed to see that Jimmy … [Read more...]
Self-Reliance Always a Good Idea
I woke up in the middle of the night last week thinking about how my ammo is stored. Thankfully my worries were put to rest after referring back to this article by Kyle Wintersteen. On Saturday evening around six we lost power from a severe thunderstorm. Our generator kicked on but it doesn’t provide enough juice to light up the whole house. That event provided the kick in the you-know-what to take proper inventory of flashlights and batteries. It also was an unexpected opportunity to review emergency situations with the family. Modern, factory-loaded rounds are designed to function reliably … [Read more...]
Erdogan Drives Investors Out of Turkey by Playing Central Banker
Turkey's President, Recep Tayyip Erdogan has spooked investors in Turkey by trying to dictate policy to the country's central bank. With the currency plummeting, his meddling in the central bank process is only making things worse. The Wall Street Journal's editorial board writes: Turkey’s lira fell as much as 5% on Wednesday, and it’s lost more than a fifth of its value this year, adding to a long decline that is forcing extreme monetary measures to compensate. Much of the blame lies with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as Turkey has been running a current-account deficit that Meanwhile, … [Read more...]
