Kelly Ayotte, a former Senator from New Hampshire, used a column in The National Interest to highlight something that has been a regular touchstone for me on Yoursurvivalguy.com, grid security. To protect yourself from cyber-attacks, natural disasters, or anything that could take out your access to power, I've urged you to prepare. Water, communications, generators; these are all things you need to think about ahead of time. Don't wait. At the national level, there is much work to be done to improve the reliability and defense of the electric grid. In her column Ayotte discusses what steps … [Read more...]

Hurricane Michael Damages F-22s
You can’t make this up. As Hurricane Michael ripped through the Florida panhandle, home to Tyndall Air Force Base, an unspecified number of F-22s were damaged because they lack the parts to be operational and were stuck in hangars to take a beating, reports the WSJ: Part of the F-22 problem is upkeep on a coating that helps the planes evade radar. Another issue is the supply chain for parts now that the U.S. no longer produces the airplane, and “some original manufacturers no longer make the parts or are completely out of business,” GAO notes. Air Force officials told GAO that a simple wiring … [Read more...]
Newport Rifle Club: Women-Only Pistol Course
The Newport Rifle Club, founded in 1876, is the oldest continuously operating rifle club in the United States. When our kids were younger, my friend and I would take them out to dinner once a month on a Friday and go to the club for kids' night, where they’d shoot .22 rifles. First, they’d review gun safety basics, then grab a mat, and target shoot for about an hour. It was a great time. Education and practice is a huge piece of the journey to becoming comfortable with a firearm. Our Friday night shoots were a great benefit for my kids. The club also offers a woman-only basic pistol course. … [Read more...]
Blue-Wave in November? Maybe Not
That blue-wave so many on the left expect to come crashing down on Republicans in November may never reach shore. On a recent trip home to attend a wedding in Ohio, The American Conservative’s Peter Van Buren writes: That slack-jawed yokel look on my face is because I just came back from a wedding and some visits in flyover country, which turned the last few days into a highly unscientific survey of old friends and new relatives. I crossed three states during my travels and talked to dozens of people about politics. It was easy, as the media had already slugged my pickup line into the same … [Read more...]
Report Cards Are In: Grading Your Governor
You want to read Cato’s 14th biennial Fiscal Report Card on America’s Governors, produced by Chris Edwards—director of tax policy studies and editor of www.downsizingGovernment.org. There’s no hiding from the teacher in the school of fiscal responsibility. The report grades 43 governors, excluding governors of Alabama, Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, New Jersey, and Virginia because of their short time in office. And it excludes Alaska’s governor because of the peculiarities of that state’s budget, explains Edwards. You can guess how poorly the Democrats scored. But, changing gears for a moment, … [Read more...]
The Kavanaugh Vote: #1 Salesmen for the GOP Midterm Rally
"So much for that Blue Wave coming in November," a friend pointed out to me this week. That could simply be our wishful thinking. But, just as President Obama was America’s #1 gun salesman, it turns out Democrats on the Judiciary Committee and Christine Blasey Ford are the #1 salesmen for a Conservative America. Let’s get to the vote to confirm Kavanaugh so the grandstanding by Senate Democrats can continue, inspiring yet another GOP midterm rally. You really can’t make up a better scenario. At The Federalist, Ellie Bufkin explains in, “Conservative Women Will Make Democrats Pay for … [Read more...]
Rhode Island’s Misguided Gun-Safety Task Force
The 43-member gun-safety task force that Gov. Gina Raimondo created last April has released its final recommendations. And it neuters Second Amendment rights for all Rhode Islanders—most of all law-abiding Rhode Islanders who own guns. I’ll make two points. First, the recommendation “Prohibits the concealed carry of firearms on the school grounds and within 1,000 feet of elementary or secondary schools and in government buildings.” Why don’t they just put a banner on the front of all schools “Welcome to Our School We’re Unarmed.” I have always felt that school administrators should do quite … [Read more...]
15 Years Since New Hampshire Lost the the Old Man of the Mountain
Take a look back at the Man on the Mountain in this piece I wrote back on May 4, 2018. It has been 15 years since the rock formation known as the Old Man of the Mountain fell apart in New Hampshire. Felice Belman of the Boston Globe explains why that was such a loss for the people of the Granite State. It was 15 years ago — May 3, 2003 — that the Old Man of the Mountain, the state’s iconic symbol, lost its 10,000-year battle with gravity and slipped from its spot atop Franconia Notch. If you weren’t there, it’s hard to appreciate just how bonkers the state’s reaction actually was. … [Read more...]
My Favorite Guns
My favorite guns are the ones you own. But for me, when it comes to handguns, I favor Sig Sauer simply because of my training at Sig Sauer Academy. (read more about my trips to Sig Sauer Academy here, here, and here). When I talk to my friends who own Glocks, they tell me how much they love them. I’m in the process of purchasing the Glock 19x—the model put forward in the U.S. Army handgun selection contest, because I figure if my friends love Glocks, and Glock submitted it for the competition, then it’s probably more than OK for me. At the end of the day, there’s never a bad time to get … [Read more...]
