You recently learned that lawmakers, mostly Democrats, in Rhode Island are furious about the lies they've been told by the bureaucrats serving under Gov. Gina Raimondo (soon to be America's Commerce Secretary, more about that later). As Raimondo was packing her bags to leave for Washington, lawmakers in Rhode Island (as blue as the deep blue sea) were getting angry. Democrat elected representatives are upset at state agency bureaucrats because as these agency reps testify before legislative committees, the elected officials receive text messages from constituents reading: “Everything they … [Read more...]

The Great Reset: What’s in a Name?
At The Wall Street Journal, Vivek Ramaswamy breaks down the techniques the billionaires of Davos are using to get the Forgotten Men and Forgotten Women of the world to pursue the elite goals of the Great Reset, rather than their own best interests. Ramaswamy takes aim at World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab, whose new book Stakeholder Capitalism, he is reviewing. Ramaswamy finishes off by noting the names of the many programs being used to achieve the globalists' goals. He writes: Marxists will be as disappointed by this book as classical capitalists. Mr. Schwab makes clear that … [Read more...]
How Can You Succeed When Politicians Treat Your Business Like Their Piggy Bank?
New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio made official what most business owners in the city have known for a long time, his mission is to redistribute their wealth. Mayor Bill de Blasio: "Our mission is to redistribute wealth." pic.twitter.com/42Dv9tsRK0 — The Hill (@thehill) December 18, 2020 At The Blaze, Breck Dumas reports on what De Blasio told viewers of a press conference: The COVID era has taught us that so clearly, and we need to do better and we will," de Blasio said. "And that means a commitment to fighting disparities and inequality in every part of the life of New York City … [Read more...]
A FAST Way to Lose SLOW Money
You read in these pages (read here, here, here, here, and here for starters) how you can end up paying twice for investments. The first charge is the mutual fund or ETF expenses like the expense ratio (and god forbid 12b-1 fees and other loads). Then there is the fee investors pay to their advisers. All in all, it can add up to more than two percent a year. It’s like ordering a Happy Meal and paying the guy in front of you to place your order. You can do better than that. Now, many advisers are taking their clients' money to invest in "model portfolios." Dawn Lim reports for The Wall … [Read more...]
Survive and Thrive December: Disaster Prep in Our Newport Bunker and Your Survival
Dear Survivor, “How’s life in the bunker?” My client asked me recently. “Great,” I responded. “Spent time talking about food distribution and network disruption today.” “Just a typical day, right?” He asked. “Exactly.” I responded. Earlier in the day, a colleague and I ran through a list of items our families are prepped for. It was sort of like a “Go, no go,” from Apollo 13 mission control (let’s hope not!). When we got to food he said, “I can’t believe Americans aren’t taking another shutdown more seriously, especially when it comes to food.” (As you know I’m good on the canned … [Read more...]
President Trump has Delivered: “That’s the Kind of Teammate I Want.”
“Score!!! Bobby Orr!” As the great Bobby Orr (and wife Peggy) write in their ad in the Manchester (New Hampshire) Union-Leader, Trump has “delivered for the American people.” Closing with, “That’s the kind of teammate I want.” New Hampshire is in play! Drive south a few hours to deep-blue Rhode Island, where Your Survival Guy reports to you this morning, and Gov. Raimondo is busy capping social gatherings to ten people, and declaring no more ice hockey because rinks are “super spreaders.” But, to be sure, in the same breath Raimondo says public buses will continue running. What’s scarier is, … [Read more...]

NEW! Survive and Thrive October: You Invest They Win, AGAIN
Dear Survivor, Let’s file this one under You Invest They Win shall we? Unprecedented monetary policy intervention by the Fed has done what all unprecedented interventions by the government do, create winners and losers. In this case, the winner is BlackRock. The Fed picked the firm to handle its corporate bond buying program. Of course, BlackRock's share of the corporate bond market grew, and the big got bigger. As one investment professional told the Wall Street Journal “The unprecedented actions taken by the Fed during Covid-19 just accelerated the trend where the biggest products … [Read more...]
Vanguard Proving Why It’s Too Big, Yet Again
Just when you think Vanguard might see the light and get back to its roots, it shows once again why it has become too big and is just like any other money-sucking behemoth--like BlackRock. Vanguard has proven this with the introduction of its own ESG investments program. In my series “You Invest, They Win,” I prove that you are not necessarily front and center, as you most certainly should be when it comes to how your money is invested. This is especially true with the new, hot, investment flavor-of-the-month, ESG. What is an ESG? It’s a marketing tool hoping to get you to feel good about … [Read more...]

New Jersey Opens a New Front in the Fiduciary Fight
Over the last few years the battle over the fiduciary duty of financial advisors has been fought at the federal level, but now New Jersey, a state that is home to many financial firms, is opening a new front in the war. New Jersey's governor wants to force financial firms registered in New Jersey to adopt a fiduciary standard. I encourage all investors to find advisors held to a fiduciary standard, as it's the only way to ensure an advisor has the clients' best interests in mind. Other advisors held to the much lower 'suitability standard' could be more willing to fill their clients' … [Read more...]
Calper’s OPM
Turns out, members of California’s public pension don’t like it when the C-suite are activists with other people’s money. The workers expressed their dissatisfaction with pension-fund-activism by firing CEO Priya Mathur and replacing her with Jason Perez. New CEO Perez's main point of criticism against Mathur's approach was her focus on "environmental, social and governance investing," which is a euphemism for using the pension fund's money to play politics. Perez ran on a platform of refocusing the pension fund on "the agency’s fiduciary duty to maximize investor returns." Sound … [Read more...]
