Apparently, like your gas stove, wood and coal-fired pizzerias are a climate emergency. New York City wants its famous pizzerias, including Lombardi’s, which is known as America’s first pizzeria, to cut particulate emissions by 75%. New Yorkers, who enjoy their pizza perfectly cooked are not happy. The Daily Mail reports:
Pizzerias which could be impacted include Lombardi’s in Little Italy, John’s of Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, and Grimaldi’s near the Brooklyn Bridge.
One anonymous restaurateur told The Post: ‘You take away the char, the thing that makes the pizza taste great, you kill it.’
He added: ‘This is an unfunded mandate and it’s going to cost us a fortune.’
Even some customers have spoken out, warning city officials not to go near their pizzas.
Saavi Sharma, 32, of Brooklyn Heights, said: ‘I’m all for responsible environmental practice but tell Al Gore to take one less private jet or something. Give me a break!’
One angry person wrote on Twitter: ‘New York officially outlawing properly made pizza.’
Another wrote: ‘Some of NYC’s most legendary pizzerias will be punished. These pizzerias have perfected a style of pizza that millions of NY’ers have craved for decades.
‘Is the current agenda from the elected class to just destroy everything old New York?’
Under the mandate, food places with coal-and-wood-fired ovens are required to hire an architect or engineer to look at the feasibility of installing emission controls devices to achieve a 75 per cent decrease in particulate emissions.
Action Line: Some of these pizzerias have operated for over 100 years. At the turn of the 20th century, there were only a few hundred cars on New York City’s streets. Now there are over 11 million.
