Here’s a wonderful post from my friend Mike Spinrad on how parents can help students succeed in school. Thank you Mike for your timeless advice. Many years ago, as a student teacher in an urban high school, I asked a parent for help in teaching an unengaged and out of control teenager. The parent responded that it was my job and not her's to teach the child. While that unhelpful suggestion may be technically true, parents can do much more to ensure their child's success. Outlining the major concepts of his book, Our Schools and Our Future, Chester Finn wrote in 1991: “…we need to … [Read more...]
Your Survival Guy Emergency: Engines Won’t Start, We’re Drifting into the Rocks
Boating conditions off Newport can be a nasty mix. Rolling ocean swells, an opposing current, mixed with 25-knot gusts, can create a challenging chop. Nevermind the reefs hiding under the surface like a school of sharks the size of Jaws waiting for you to get too close. Over the Fourth of July weekend, we traveled by boat from Newport, RI to my parents' house in Mattapoisett. Talking with my dad, coming ashore, motoring to his slip in his dinghy, he told me about the engine problems he’d been having and how he and his boatyard guy came up with a fix. After a long weekend of social distance … [Read more...]

You’re Telling Me about 8% and Pickleball
If you’re thinking about retirement or investing in some high yield real estate deal, don’t. Because as soon as you run a few scenarios grounded in reality and not “pie in the sky” dreams, you quickly realize losing income and principle are grave mistakes you don’t recover from, ever. In my conversations with investors, I hear it all. You wouldn’t believe some of the dividend yields I’m told are out there, ranging from eight to twenty percent. Good luck with that. When the government offers ten-year treasuries with an annual yield of 0.66%, it’s time for a reality check. “But,” you … [Read more...]
Here’s What You’re Telling Me after Your Fourth of July Holiday
You have a lot on your mind, especially having shared the Fourth of July holiday with friends and loved ones. In my conversations with you this week, you’re telling me: Your concerns about your kids or grandkids going back to school and a big concern is how the parents, for obvious reasons, will cope. You are enjoying your backyard more than ever and wonder what is going on in blue state cities run by mayors and governors gone wild. Your gun store is doing record numbers. It’s hard finding ammo. Why isn’t the National Guard immediately called in? Tucker 2024 Governors … [Read more...]

Your Retirement Life: On the Road Again, Part II
In the summer of 1984, we traveled across the country in our 21 foot Winnebago Brave (yes we were) and can relate to this article as a new swath of RV drivers hit the roads to dodge COVID restrictions. Joe Barrett writes in The Wall Street Journal: Brad Swenson, who lives in his RV, was at a stoplight in the Black Hills of South Dakota last month when he saw a rental RV trying to use a fast-food drive-through—a typical rookie mistake. “It was like I was about to see a dog get hit by a car. I wanted to help, but there was nothing I could do,” said Mr. Swenson, 50, a Seattle property … [Read more...]
RIP Joe Porcaro
The great Jazz drummer and percussionist Joe Porcaro has passed away. Joe was the father of Toto cofounders, Steve, Jeff and Mike Porcaro, and an accomplished performer and instructor. Billboard writes of Joe's life: Over a decades-long career, Porcaro performed on scores of albums for the likes of Madonna, Boz Scaggs, Glen Campbell, Glen Campbell and Barbra Streisand, and cut a string of records with Rosemary Clooney and Lalo Schifrin. Porcaro’s musical talents clearly rubbed off on his boys, who repaid their gifts by inviting their dad to guest on several of their albums in the ‘80s and … [Read more...]
Neil Peart Statue Closer to the Heart
It’s been a tough year for the drumming community as we lost another legend in Joe Porcaro this week and Neil Peart in January. The CBC's Mike Moore tells the story of Morgan MacDonald, a sculptor who has spent 1,000 hours creating a statue of Neil Peart. Moore writes: 1,000 hours of design could land Morgan MacDonald's statue in Peart's hometown A St. John's-based sculptor who has become well-known for works about Newfoundland and Labrador's history and culture has taken on a project rooted in something else: a lifetime of admiration for legendary drummer Neil Peart, who died earlier … [Read more...]
BLM in the UK: “Abolish the Police, Remove Prisons and Get Rid of Capitalism”
Black Lives Matter joined Save Yemen in a protest in the UK against "'white capitalist slave owners", systemic racism, and the war in Yemen.' reports Kurt Zindulka for Breitbart. He writes: The far-left rhetoric seen at Black Lives Matter protests and from the leadership of BLM UK has led to one prominent activist distancing herself from the group, saying that the movement has been “hijacked” by a group of Marxists. “The issue with BLM UK is they have not revealed themselves, they have not been transparent. They are abolitionists, they believe in the removal of prisons, smashing capitalism … [Read more...]
