The Chinese are working on a solution to identifying targets at 200 miles for its very-long-range air-to-air missile (VLRAAM). David Axe of the National Interest reports that the Chinese military has proposed building a targeting network around its Divine Eagle, a high altitude long endurance (HALE) counter stealth UAV. The hypersonic VLRAAM is truly state of the art and, if coupled with an effective targeting network, could put the U.S. stealth fighters in jeopardy. The U.S. currently does not have a VLRAAM in its arsenal. The most advanced air to air missile in America’s arsenal is the … [Read more...]
Your Survival: What is Your Longevity Plan?
During a conversation with a client yesterday, she thanked us for sending her the book The Longevity Plan: Seven Life-Transforming Lessons from Ancient China. “Rather than put it on the bookshelf," she told me, “I’m keeping it on my bed-side table for easy reference.” We live busy lives today, where technological clutter abounds. One truth repeated throughout the book is the sophistication in simplicity, a concept Richard Young has referred to as a tenet for your investment success. From The Longevity Plan: Seven Life-Transforming Lessons from Ancient China, by Dr. John D. Day: “COME … [Read more...]
Digital Currency Risks: Sweden Considers Cashless Society
When you consider good governance vs bad governance, Sweden typically falls into the good camp. Life is pretty good if you’re a Swede. But a recent push by central banks to adopt a cash-free-society has put many on edge. Riksbank governor, Stefan Ingves, says going cash-less is for the “collective good” of society. “Most citizens would feel uncomfortable to surrender these social functions to private companies,” he said. “It should be obvious that Sweden’s preparedness would be weakened if, in a serious crisis or war, we had not decided in advance how households and companies would pay for … [Read more...]
Is Vanguard too Big?
Personally, I have had only one minor administrative error recently with Vanguard where they incorrectly deposited SEP-IRA money into my traditional IRA. I called them to explain their error, they pulled up the letter of instruction, recognized their mistake and made the correction. Problem solved. With record inflows of more than $1 billion per day in 2017, or $369.3 billion, some investors are wondering if Vanguard’s success is a problem. I don’t think that’s the case. In a transaction oriented business there are always going to be mistakes. They can be corrected. When I worked at … [Read more...]
How Many “Retirees” Will Keep Working?: Part IV
When Laura Sexton retired as a senior chief hospital corpsman in the US Navy, she applied her Navy skills to her new job: Lead ski-run groomer and snowcat operator at Deer Valley Ski Resort in Park City. According to Sexton,” writes Nancy L. Anderson in Forbes “the Navy uses a three-step approach to learning anything that could serve us all well: See it, Do it, Teach someone else. First, you physically observe how to complete a task as it is explained (see). Second, you perform the task (do). Then, show someone else how to do it (teach).” The article continues: Many people want to (or need … [Read more...]
Survive and Thrive April: Vanguard GNMA and Your Retirement Years
When the financial crisis destroyed the stock market in 2008, guess which fund weathered the storm? You guessed it Vanguard GNMA. When the tech bust destroyed the stock market at the beginning of this century, guess which fund weathered the storm? Right again, Vanguard GNMA. That’s two huge busts in the stock market so far this century. Many mutual funds focus on 10-year performance. As 2018 moves forward into 2019, the brutal losses of 2008 will be rolled off, and investors may not see the risk inherent in stock funds as they make their allocation decisions. But a retirement lasts … [Read more...]
Don Imus Signs-Off
Thank you Don Imus for 50-years of entertainment and enlightenment. At age 77, Mr. Imus signed off at 7:20 this morning for the last time from his flagship WABC (770 AM) in New York in an emotional thanks to, “You,” the listener, and a heartfelt, “I’m going to miss you.” “Much more than a ‘shock jock,’ he and his team at their best blended sharp-edged satiric humor into intelligent radio for grownups,” writes David Hinckley. His long-time producer Bernard McGuirk and “crazy” Sid Rosenberg will take over the reins with the Bernie & Sid Show. What I liked most about the “I-Man” was his … [Read more...]
Trees don’t Grow to the Sky
Why I’m Buying Vanguard GNMA
You always need to study your downside protection and do what’s difficult to do. Recently, I added half of my 2017 SEP-IRA contribution to Vanguard GNMA—a sizable addition to my overall GNMA position. I didn’t do it because I feel like I can predict where interest rates are headed. Who can? It’s all fine and good when the talking heads spout off about three or four rate increases this year and more to come next year, but in reality their advice doesn’t cost them a penny. If they’re wrong and the market crashes, like it did twice already this century, will they be there for you, or me for … [Read more...]
Turns Out, Someone Does Want to Take Your Guns Away
Walking through Central Park on Saturday on our way to get the best bagels at Barney Greengrass (read my latest Survive and Thrive: Escape to Margaritaville here) we were delayed by the anti-gun marchers clogging up the streets. We saw countless parents with their children in tow, carrying anti-Second Amendment signs. Many of the parents’ signs read “I’m Marching for my Children.” There was also a report over the weekend about a school arming its children with river rocks to stone the next school intruder. You really can’t make this stuff up. At the end of the day if the anti-gunners get … [Read more...]
