If you want a big welfare state like those in Europe, prepare to pay for it. Despite promises from many presidential candidates to soak the rich, the only way to raise enough money to provide the Middle Class with a major social safety net is to take that money right from their pockets. In other OECD countries, reports my friend Chris Edwards at the Cato Institute, this is achieved by using consumption and payroll taxes. Those are taxes that hit the Middle Class the hardest. He writes: For its 36 member countries, the OECD publishes data on federal-state-local tax revenues as percent of gross … [Read more...]
You Can’t Help But See the Truth About the Soviet Union in Chernobyl
Have you seen the HBO miniseries Chernobyl? It’s not exactly uplifting. But it gives you an inside look into why the Soviet Union collapsed—the truth got out. And it was a catalyst for me to explain socialism to my high school-aged son. It’s heartbreaking. And it’s hard not to get stuck on Chernobyl after you see it. That’s why when Chernobyl was over we watched Red Army for another personal account of what it was like being a star player for the team around the same time before and after Chernobyl. The connection between the two reflects the pressure cooker the Soviet Union … [Read more...]
Man Made or Natural Disaster: You Need to Be Prepared
You may have seen that PG&E will shut down power for up to 800,000 customers in California in an attempt to prevent its lines from sparking wildfires like those that ravaged the state last year. So while Californians may avoid the terror of more wildfires, they will suffer the effects of having no power. In either case, those who aren't prepared will get the worst of it. The Wall Street Journal reports: The company has said the shut-offs could last for a number of days and would cover parts of 34 of California’s 58 counties, a huge swath of the nation’s most populous state. “We … [Read more...]
Hillary Clinton the Corrupt Tornado in the Blue Pantsuit and her Gang
What Hillary and Elizabeth Warren will never get is that President Trump understands America better than they ever will. When I drive through rural New England I see exactly what Fletch Daniels describes on a recent visit to his daughter at Hillsdale College. Democrats speak to the ultra-rich who want to keep their oligarchies and those who depend on government for their way of life who have been trained not to think for themselves. It’s time for an awakening because the Clintons, Bidens, Obamas, and Warrens are only looking out for you know who. Daniels writes at The American Thinker: If … [Read more...]
Are Taxes More Important than Food, Healthcare and Clothing?
Writing at CNS News, Terence P. Jeffrey explains that Americans pay more for taxes than food, healthcare, and clothing combined. Worst of all, Jeffrey points out, this looks like the new normal for Americans. He writes: That Americans are forced to pay more for government than they pay for food, clothing and health care combined has become an enduring fact of life. A review of the BLS Table R-1s for the last six years on record shows that in every one of those years, the average American consumer unit paid more in taxes than it paid for food, clothing and health care combined. In 2013, … [Read more...]
84% of Americans Say There’s Nothing Wrong With Making Money
Is there anything wrong with trying to make as much money as you honestly can? According to 84% of Americans, the answer is no. It's somewhat surprising that 16% of Americans would harbor any doubt about that. Cato Institute research fellow Emily Ekins explains the findings of the new Cato 2019 Welfare, Work and Wealth Survey. She writes: The Cato 2019 Welfare, Work, and Wealth Survey, a new national poll of 1,700 U.S. adults, finds that 84% of Americans say there is nothing wrong with trying to make as much money as one honestly can. The survey also finds the public believes that growing the … [Read more...]
The Middle Class Secret Democrats Don’t Want You to Know
Democrats keep attacking President Trump's economic successes with accusations he's only helping the rich, but that notion is belied by the data. Stephen Moore explains at The Wall Street Journal, writing: President Trump’s critics can’t deny that the economy is doing well, so instead they insist all the benefits have gone to the rich and large corporations. “America’s middle class is under attack,” Sen. Elizabeth Warren asserted in her presidential campaign announcement last December. The latest data from the Census Bureau monthly surveys tell a different story. Real median household … [Read more...]

Trump’s Total Approval Beats Obama’s
Polls don’t mean much these days but it’s worth noting that even as the Dems pile on the presidency, it’s Trump that has come out looking like the winner in a major way. His approval numbers look beautiful! The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Wednesday shows that 51% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. See the chart of Trump vs. Obama ratings here. … [Read more...]
