While the presidential campaign teams fight over the results at the top of the ballot, Democrats are already beginning to lament over their poor performance further down. Politico is predicting a "decade of control," for the GOP after Democrats failed to flip any statehouses. Ally Mutnick and Sabrina Rodriguez write: An abysmal showing by Democrats in state legislative races on Tuesday not only denied them victories in Sun Belt and Rust Belt states that would have positioned them to advance their policy agenda — it also put the party at a disadvantage ahead of the redistricting that will … [Read more...]
What if You Don’t Have to Cut the Cord to Pay Less?
When you look at your monthly statement, do you feel like you have a good handle on what’s going on? You punch in an ETF or mutual fund symbol, but it doesn’t tell you much. It’s like trying to pick a show on Netflix—let’s see what this is about—only to realize five episodes in that it was a waste of time. Your time is valuable. You deserve to know what’s going on from day one. Today you have advisors selling you blueprints that sound good, but then you realize they’re stuffing your portfolio with ETFs and mutual funds that charge you a fee on top of what you’re paying the advisor. A lot of … [Read more...]
Arizona: Listen to Rachel Maddow’s Terrified Response
I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but good results came in for Trump last night in Arizona. The best part was hearing Rachel Maddow’s terrified response. … [Read more...]
When Isn’t Money Tight? Read More to Find Out
If you’re like most investors I speak with, you’ve put in your time. You’re in retirement or well along the road to planning for it. You’ve made sacrifices. You’ve put the kids through college or have saved enough to do so, and you feel like you’re over the hump. That’s a great feeling. It’s what you imagined that first time you sent a check in to invest. The idea that someday you’d be able to enjoy it. It’s a special moment. For many others, that moment may never come. That’s because, from my vantage point at least, investment advisers don’t spend enough time understanding why investors do … [Read more...]
The Big Blue Blobs in the Northeast
You don’t even need to watch election night coverage to know how New England votes. It’s all blue, all the time, except for perhaps a tiny congressional district in Maine. And we’ve seen how deep-blue New York City has handled the coronavirus. Not to mention all the NY license plates zooming around Newport, RI. So I’ll include NY in the deep blue northeast blob. As of this morning, three-quarters of Rhode Island votes are tallied, with over half of them coming from Providence county. It’s a landslide for Biden as the blobs keep spreading. Massachusetts, with blue blob Boston, extends its … [Read more...]
Why Americans Love Trump and Their Country
Remember when an actor from California named Ronal Reagan accepted the Republican nomination for President in July of 1980? I do. Because my parents were there, in Detroit, at Joe Louis Arena proudly wearing their Reagan hats. It’s captured in a picture I see every time I walk up the stairs in their house. They look so happy. I’ll never forget the energy they brought home with them, along with some small gifts for my sister and me. They were so excited. They lived through the fear of the 70s, raising a small family, trying to pay the bills, and wondering if life would always be so hard. That … [Read more...]
Rich Man, Poor Man and the Greatest Generation
Happy Election Day. It’s nice to know one candidate isn’t in it for the money. Originally posted December 4, 2018. You may have read Rich Man, Poor Man—one of my favorite pieces ever written by the late great investment writer Richard Russell. It’s one of those timeless pieces that makes me feel like he’s still with us. And with the passing of President George H.W. Bush, I’m reminded of the sacrifices of the “Greatest Generation” and their unique perspective on life. You see, Richard Russell served in World War II, like President Bush, and knew what it felt like to worry about … [Read more...]
Trump’s Great White Wall: Part III
“I never liked Reagan much,” Papaw later told me. 'But I hated that son of a bitch Mondale.'” And that was the one and only time Papaw voted for a Republican explains J.D. Vance in his #1 New York Times bestseller Hillbilly Elegy. Why did Vance’s grandfather vote for Reagan? Because Reagan connected with the “workingman” much in the way Donald Trump has connected with the “Forgotten Man.” And how about the attacks on Trump or Reagan for that matter? Does, or will, the Great White Wall ever disappear and go quietly into the night? Hardly. The Great White Wall that supported Trump is America. … [Read more...]

President Trump has Delivered: “That’s the Kind of Teammate I Want.”
“Score!!! Bobby Orr!” As the great Bobby Orr (and wife Peggy) write in their ad in the Manchester (New Hampshire) Union-Leader, Trump has “delivered for the American people.” Closing with, “That’s the kind of teammate I want.” New Hampshire is in play! Drive south a few hours to deep-blue Rhode Island, where Your Survival Guy reports to you this morning, and Gov. Raimondo is busy capping social gatherings to ten people, and declaring no more ice hockey because rinks are “super spreaders.” But, to be sure, in the same breath Raimondo says public buses will continue running. What’s scarier is, … [Read more...]
