Here are the "hard facts" about the devastation that is about to unfold on small restaurants in shutdown states. This, from one of my family's favorite restaurants (TSK) here in Newport, is the unvarnished truth. Forcing businesses to work at minimum capacity is going to kill them off in a bloody wave of bankruptcy. Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo has tried to sugarcoat the reality facing businesses by saying in a recent press conference that by summer 2021, things would be getting back to normal. Here's what's really facing the restaurant industry, without Raimondo's sugar … [Read more...]
Looking for a Better America
After decades of urbanization, Americans are rebelling against the “bigger is better” mentality of city-living. Seeking a smaller, more affordable, sustainable, and secure lifestyle, some are venturing out from the mega-cities in search of a different life.
A number of techniques have become popular in an effort to save, especially scaling down the size of one’s home. Living small and saving big is even better when it’s coupled with living in a state that treats you more like a human than an ATM it can withdraw money from.
Look for a better America today. Start by reading what I have written to help you below:
“I Never Saw My Kids,” He Said. “Now, I See Them All the Time”
A few thoughts as we await the recounts and the lawsuits. Game on. I was talking with a client this week who used to commute to Boston every day. It was an hour and a half each way. It was a soul-sucking endeavor. “I never saw my kids,” he said. “Now, I see them all the time.” (for better or worse, ha! My comment). He’s working from home and is as productive as ever. He emphatically stated, “I’m never commuting back to the city AGAIN. I don’t care what I have to do.” I’ve been thinking about this a lot. We aren’t going back to pre-COVID America—vaccine or no vaccine. You know … [Read more...]
Zoom, Zoom, Zoom Towns
"We joke that it's becoming a `Zoom town,'" Angelica Webb of Redfin says, referring to the now-familiar video-conferencing platform. Bend, OR, for example, is becoming one. "A lot of folks are moving to Bend without having ever stepped foot here. They've heard good things and want to get out of their cramped San Francisco or Seattle apartments, so they're coming here and buying awesome, 3,000-square-foot colonial homes." The same is true with the migration out of New York City to places like Newport, RI. What it means for restaurants left in the cold is yet to be seen. But it doesn't have a … [Read more...]
Who Wants to Live the Island Life? You Do
Originally posted September 14, 2020. Imagine sitting under a palm tree, toes in the sand, gazing across a turquoise sea with not a care in the world. Wouldn’t it be nice to feel like this most days of the week rather than only on vacation, especially in times like these? Now, I know it’s not exactly practical, even if you have a tropical island as the backdrop of your Zoom calls. But you’d be surprised at how much island life is right in front of your eyes. For example, when it comes to investing, my favored Prudent Man certainly stands alone as an island far away from your everyday … [Read more...]
Chelsea, MA Gives $300/Month You’ll Eventually Pay For
The Sunday Boston Globe explains that the town of Chelsea, MA, will begin testing a program giving about $300 a month in supplemental income to families of need. A local billionaire is providing a chunk of the money (through her foundation thanks to the family’s online furniture business). Is it guilt money? And what happens when she gets bored and moves to another crusade? Because once the government starts giving money, it never stops. The article points out it will be given with credit cards to avoid the stigma of government assistance. You and I know the end game is for the … [Read more...]
Why They Flee
When there’s no law and order, there’s no reason to stick around. It’s why they flee. When there’s nowhere for kids to play, there’s no reason to stick around. It’s why they flee. When governors go wild, putting themselves at the head of the dinner table. It’s why they flee. When there’s no work because of their lockdowns. It’s why they flee. When hope is gone. It’s why they flee. You know what life is like under blue state governors and mayors. It’s why they flee. And it’s not getting better. Yesterday, Rhode Island Governor Gina Raimondo held a presser to say we need to make some … [Read more...]
Californians Desperate to Escape: Look for the Island Life
You can't enjoy life with wildfires, high taxes, crippling regulation, unchecked rioting in the streets, and a pandemic working through your overcrowded city. Yet, that's the situation many Californians face every day. That's why so many Golden Staters are looking to escape the city, and instead, live the island life. Many are looking to Hawaii as a refuge from California. Trevor Boyer of the Daily Mail reports "From January to June 2020, Californians have bought $587.6 million worth of Hawaii real estate, or 41 percent of the total from U.S. buyers." He writes: Beset by fire and a … [Read more...]
MELTDOWN: Nancy Pelosi Shocked Wolf Blitzer Would Ask Her a Real Question
During his long career, CNN's Wolf Blitzer hasn't been known as an antagonist of the left. In fact, most viewers would consider him a friendly interviewer for Democratic politicians who want to get out their talking points. Perhaps that's why Speaker Nancy Pelosi went into full meltdown mode when Blitzer asked her a question she didn't want to answer, and made repeated attempts to get her to respond. Watch the video below. It starts out OK, but Pelosi slowly goes off the rails, with the wheels really starting to come off around 4:40. The problem for Pelosi is that she really wants the … [Read more...]
To Where Will You Flee?
Do you have an escape plan? Do you live the island life? Getting prepared for the worst is a way of life, even if it looks out of place. This summer, a friend was standing in my garage and saw all of these blue 55-gallon water barrels and said “Looks like a scene out of Breaking Bad.” That’s the price of being prepared. Here’s what I did, I hope you are with me. Storing Water for the Winter You don’t have to be crazy to store water. Over the weekend I completed my winter water storage. Below is a great video on how you can do it with 55-gallon barrels. I too bought mine at … [Read more...]
If You Flee Don’t Die Here
Your Survival Guy is here to report this Columbus Day Monday, that the streets of Newport were buzzing this weekend with newly arrived transplants from places like New York City. They tote their Chanel bags and have puffy lips adorned with bright red lipstick, looking like fish out of water. If you were looking to buy real estate here, that ship has sailed. Scanning the real estate transactions, you see buyers with names you don’t remember being part of your child’s Little League team or school homeroom. Instead you see last names you don’t recognize, followed by: Family Trust, LLC, or … [Read more...]
